Peter’s presentation will describe William Hann's Northern Expedition that set out to determine the mineral and agricultural potential of Cape York Peninsula and the critical role played by the indigenous guide.

Abstract  This presentation will describe William Hann's Northern Expedition that set out to determine the mineral and agricultural potential of Cape York Peninsula. The expedition was plagued by disharmony and there was later strong criticism of the leadership and its failure to provide any meaningful analysis of the findings. The descendants of both the geologist and the indigenous guide on the expedition have collaborated to bring new documentary sources and traditional knowledge together to challenge the historical account of this expedition. The presentation will highlight the previously undocumented scientific outcomes arising from this expedition, the failures of leadership and the critical role played by the indigenous guide.
