Information resources at the Gardens

  • Our Fronds magazine – we publish 3 issues a year, containing a wealth of botanical information, news and our program of activities.
  • Our eBulletins to members are sent out when news and announcements are ready - usually monthly. Use this link to subscribe and to view past issues.
  • The Friends Lounge at the Gardens has a good collection of reference books and lots of interesting reading.
  • The ANBG library has over 18,500 books as well as serials, videos, DVDs and interactive CD-ROMs. Friends are welcome to use the library and may borrow items once registered.

    The ANBG Library & Archive contains a variety of artworks including watercolours, cartoons, and Indigenous paintings. The artworks are used in displays throughout the year and may be viewed for research purposes by appointment only.

    The opening hours are Mon-Fri 9:30-4:30, but there are still restrictions on visitor numbers, so please call (02) 6250 9480 or email ANBG.Library@awe.gov.au before visiting. All visitors to the Library need to abide by the COVID Safety Plan, noting in particular the need to limit visits and to observe the maximum capacity of the space. Friends can still access library materials via the 'Click and Collect' service: please contact the Librarian to discuss your requirements. The 'Click and Collect' boxes are in the Visitor Centre and are convenient for returning items.

  • The Botanical Bookshop in the Visitors Centre carries a wide selection of botanical books that cover all regions of Australia, and many more titles related to Australian environment, history and culture.

  • List of Australian Botanic Gardens and Arboreta – A Wikipedia page listing over 140 Australian state and regional botanic gardens.
  • Australian Association of Friends of Australian Botanic Gardens – The AAFBG is a national network providing a forum for communication, information and promotion between its members, related Botanic Gardens groups and the community. Its journal Eucalypt (formerly named Campsis) is currently produced by members of Friends of ANBG Canberra on behalf of the AAFBG Committee. It promotes and provides news on members' ideas, innovations, challenges, events, and successes or failures.You can also subscribe to their E-ucalypt Newsletter.
  • Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) – An international organisation to ensure the world-wide conservation of threatened plants, the continued existence of which are intrinsically linked to global issues including poverty, human well-being and climate change.
  • Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand (BGANZ) – The chief body representing the interests of botanic gardens in Australia and New Zealand. BGANZ promotes the interests and activities of botanic gardens in the two nations and more generally, and enhances the state of botanic gardens for the benefit of the community.   • Australian Native Plants Society - Canberra Region - a non-profit, voluntary organisation dedicated to the growing, conservation, preservation, promotion and appreciation of Australian native plants.
  • Australian Network for Plant Conservation – working to save Australia’s native plants through: exchange of information and ideas; publication of research, on-ground practice and guidelines; and training in conservation and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Australasian Native Orchid Society - dedicated to the cultivation, conservation and scientific study of native orchids in the Australasian region.
  • Friends of Grasslands - an Australian community group which advocates and educates for conservation of Australian native grasslands and grassy ecosystems.
  • Friends of the National Arboretum Canberra - an enthusiastic group of people who are interested in supporting the Arboretum and its ongoing development.
  • Molonglo Catchment Group – a network of Landcare and Park Care groups in the Molonglo Catchment. Our role is to help these groups promote and undertake environmental protection and enhancement within the catchment.
  • Ginninderra Catchment Group - an umbrella group of community volunteers working to advance the health of the Ginninderra Catchment through effective engagement with government, agencies, business, schools and the catchment community.
  • Australian Flora Foundation - fosters research into the biology and cultivation of Australian plants by funding research projects, giving prizes for research, organising seminars, publishing research findings and other means.
  • Canberra Environment and Sustainability Resource Centre - works directly with the community to ensure the best environmental outcomes for the ACT through targeted education, information and practical application.
  • National Parks Association ACT - works to promote National Parks and the protection of our fauna and flora, scenery, natural features and cultural heritage.
  • Canberra Birdwatching Group (COG) - committed to meeting the challenge of the study and conservation of native birds. From small beginnings nearly 30 years ago, COG has grown into a large, effective and influential organisation that supports research and puts its case on conservation issues.
  • BirdLife Australia - Birds Australia and Bird Observation & Conservation Australia (BOCA) united in January 2012 to work towards a sustainable future for our beloved Australian birds.
  • Field Naturalists Association of Canberra - fosters interest in natural history by means of meetings and regular field outings.
  • Australian Garden History Society: ACT/Monaro/Riverina Region - formed in 1980, the AGHS brings together people from diverse backgrounds united by an appreciation of and concern for our parks, gardens and cultural landscapes as part of Australia's heritage.

  • Southern Tablelands Ecosystem Park (STEP) - a regional botanic garden, education and conservation centre demonstrating southern tablelands species within the National Arboretum Canberra.
