SUMMARY:Ross Bennett ‘Reptiles and frogs of the ACT: how to stop worrying and love snakes!’
DESCRIPTION:Ross will provide an overview of our local herpetofauna\, some historical insights into their status and an opportunity to dispel some of the myths surrounding the snakes in particular. Ross will bring a couple of his ‘friends’ to illustrate some points. \nRoss has never known anything but fascination for wildlife and the environment. He came to the ACT from Victorian National Parks Service and went to combine his roles in land\, wildlife and fire management here with CSIRO and other agency wildlife programs across Australia. Somewhere along the way he was asked to write a field guide to the ACT’s frogs and reptiles by the ACT National Parks Association who published it in 1997. He then went on to fulfil another dream in the building and operation of the Australian Reptile Centre at Gold Creek. Eleven years later\, with a daughter of that age deserving his attention\, he took ‘early retirement’ and now has the time to continue his interests in wildlife combined with the travelling which was put on hold for so many years.

SUMMARY:Gerry Marantelli talks at Snakes Alive: 'Saving frogs because we MUST!'
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to hear Gerry Marantelli of the Amphibian Research Centre (ARC) in Victoria\, and for nibbles afterwards. \nOver one third of the world’s amphibians and the ecosystems they hold together are now threatened in the largest mass extinction since the dinosaurs. Gerry’s talk will cover the latest research into the problems facing frogs around the world. He will guide us through why we need frogs\, why they are now threatened\, and what progress has been made to bring our most critically endangered frog species back from the brink. \nThe ARC is dedicated to the research and conservation of Australian frogs. It is also involved in efforts to breed and preserve a number of Australia’s most endangered frogs\, including the Southern Corroboree Frog. \nCome along to the theatrette at the Australian National Botanic Gardens\, and join us afterwards for nibbles and soft drink\, and an opportunity to discuss issues with Gerry further. \nWhen: Friday 18 January 2013. \nTime: 4:30-6pm\nBookings: Call Margaret Ning on 0427 788 304. \nThis talk will follow the Snakes Alive exhibition of live reptiles and amphibians put on by the ACT Herpetological Association (open 10am-4pm on the day in the Gardens; $5 adults\, $2 kids). \nFor more information about the ARC and ACT Herpetological Association\, have a look at www.frogs.org.au and www.actha.org.au. Raffle tickets supporting Corroboree Frog research will be available at the talk should you wish to contribute.

SUMMARY:Centenary Chat: Ian Warden ‘Tiptoe through the Telopeas: Why Marion Mahony Griffin would have boycotted Floriade’
DESCRIPTION:Ian Warden\, Gang Gang columnist of the Canberra Times\, will launch the 2013 lunchtime talks program\, with a Centenary Chat on Marion Mahony Griffin’s enthusiasm for Australian native flora. January’s theme is Family and Friends in the Capital\, appropriately\, given the extent to which Marion’s enthusiasm for our native flora is shared by modern-day Canberrans; they flock to the Gardens each January to listen to music in a setting of magnificent eucalypts. \nIan Warden describes himself as a Canberra writer and humourless native plant zealot and the only person in his street growing Eucalyptus crenulata in his front garden.

SUMMARY:Centenary Chat: Jocelyn Plovits ‘The National Arboretum Canberra: relationship and synergy’
DESCRIPTION:The bushfires that ravaged Canberra in 2003 were the catalyst for the creation of the National Arboretum Canberra first envisaged by the Burley Griffins. The National Arboretum\, which will open in early 2013\, provides an opportunity to conserve threatened species\, a place for community recreation and a valuable resource for ongoing education and research.  \nUnder the Centenary theme of Cultural Diversity\, Jocelyn Plovits will address the history\, design\, challenges and successes of the project from the perspective of the Friends of the Arboretum. She will also discuss the National Arboretum’s potential for the future\, the contribution of volunteers to the success of a wonderful and exciting Arboretum and the importance of collaboration with a number of key entities\, among them\, the ANBG. \nJocelyn Plovits is Chair of the Friends of the National Arboretum.

SUMMARY:Matthew Higgins ‘Elyne Mitchell: mountain author’
DESCRIPTION:Elyne Mitchell is remembered fondly for her wildly successful Silver Brumby books from the 1950s onward.  But not only did she write children’s fiction\, Elyne also wrote a number of pioneering non-fiction works addressing Australians’ relationship with their environment.  Elyne’s passionate connection with the upper Murray and the Snowy Mountains had a fundamental influence on her and her work.  She was also a very keen skier and horse rider and she helped run the family’s Towong Hill property.  Elyne received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to literature in 1988 and Charles Sturt University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 1993.  A year before her death in 2002 the Corryong Library was renamed in her honour.  The National Library of Australia holds her papers\, and one of the typewriters used by Mitchell is held by the National Museum of Australia. \nMatthew Higgins\, an Associate of the Centre for Historical Research at the National Museum of Australia\, has been working in Canberra as a professional historian for 30 years.  He has worked with the Australian War Memorial\, the Australian Heritage Commission\, and the National Museum of Australia.  He has completed many freelance projects (including oral history interviews for the National Library of Australia)\, and is the author of numerous articles and a number of books\, the most recent of which is Rugged beyond imagination: stories from an Australian mountain region (NMA Press 2009).  Matthew is passionate about the Australian high country and he skis and bushwalks as often as opportunity allows.

SUMMARY:Barbara Allan ‘COG’s bird blitz: the first eight years’
DESCRIPTION:In 2005 the Canberra Ornithologists’ Group began an ACT-wide bird count over the last weekend in October\, involving up to 100 members each year. The talk will look at the overall results of the surveys\, the variability between years\, the influence of land use types and role the bird blitz plays in our knowledge of the ACT avifauna. Do Rufous Fantails come through your garden before or after the last weekend in October? Are fairy-wrens breeding by then? Are the koels back? These are some of the issues the blitz results can explore. \nBarbara Allan is an amateur birdwatcher who has coordinated the bird blitz since its inception.
