SUMMARY:Bill Hopkins - ‘Insights from Gardening at the South African High Commission’
DESCRIPTION:Bill Hopkins looked after the beautifully designed and maintained gardens at the South African High Commission in Yarralumla for 43 years. The garden is known for its spring display of flowering shrubs\, bulbs and perennials surrounded by immaculate lawns and imposing marble statues. Vibrant South African species flourish in sheltered beds\, and the small pond and water fountain is surrounded by proteas. Now retired\, Bill  will relate the history of the garden and talk about its design and the plants. He has many stories about fascinating people who spent time in the garden during his long tenure. \nBill Hopkins\, now retired\, was gardener at the High Commission for 43 years.

SUMMARY:Centenary Chat. Dr Judy West - ‘The Science Behind Your Gardens’
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the scientific role of the ANBG and show how research has influenced its development over the past 40 years. From the initial concept of a science-based botanic garden\, nestled among natural bushland and on a hillside juxtaposed with ANU and CSIRO\, the ANBG has fulfilled its early goals to grow\, study and promote Australian plants. The plant collections on display at the Gardens provide a key asset and represent several endangered ecological communities of the Canberra region. Through horticultural and taxonomy research\, advanced botanical information management and conservation activities – and now incorporating seed banking and seed science – the ANBG pursues its challenging mission to inspire\, inform and connect people to Australian flora. \n                                                                                                                             \nSince 2009 Judy has been Executive Director of the ANBG and head of Parks and Biodiversity Science within the then Department of the Environment\, Water\, Heritage and the Arts. She has also been Director of the Australian National Herbarium since 1989.

SUMMARY:Bernard Fennessy Memorial Lecture & Centenary Chat. Dr Lyn Hinds - ‘Managing Vertebrate Pests – Who is Outsmarting Whom’
DESCRIPTION:Management of overabundant vertebrates remains problematic\, nationally and internationally. A range of lethal and non-lethal management techniques are available for different species\, but are they effective? Do current management approaches effectively reduce the impacts of vertebrate pest populations in the landscape?                                                     \nDr Lyn Hinds is a Senior Principal Research Scientist with CSIRO Ecosystems Sciences. Her current research interests include the regulation of reproduction\, biology and management of problem species from rodents to marsupials. Most of her work is done in collaboration with national and international colleagues.

SUMMARY:Dr Roger Farrow: 'From the Plenty to the Olgas: a botanic trip across the Red Centre'
DESCRIPTION:The Canberra Branch of the Australian Native Plants Society (ANPS) runs an annual big trip\, which last year was to the Red Centre. A group from ANPS travelled for three weeks through the spectacular scenery of the East and West MacDonnells and beyond\, exploring rugged gorges and seeing the plants in flower. The challenge was in naming the many species that were seen as no flora is complete for this vast and diverse area.Today Roger will show the audience a small selection of the species the group observed according to habitat and landscape. \nDr Roger Farrow\, formerly of CSIRO\, is a member of the ANPS.

SUMMARY:Allen Mawer: 'Canberry Tales: an informal history'
DESCRIPTION:Allen Mawer will be talking about the history of Acton\, which he describes as Canberra’s time capsule. His most recent book\, Canberry Tales\, takes readers through the three great discontinuities of Acton time: at European settlement white replaced black; at Federation nation replaced colony and state; and most recently institutions replaced people. Acton was also the site where Canberra’s love affair with plants began with Charles Weston’s first nursery. \nGranville Allen Mawer is an historian who has published widely in the fields of maritime history and exploration but he has also made forays into Australian history\, most notably in a biography of Jack Doolan\, the original Wild Colonial Boy. Ahab’s Trade\, his history of South Sea whaling\, was shortlisted for both the NSW and Queensland Premiers’ history prizes. South by Northwest\, a history of the search for the magnetic poles\, was runner-up for the Frank Broeze maritime history prize.  He recently edited his father’s wartime journal\, which was published in 2011 as Diary of a Spitfire Pilot. \n
