SUMMARY:Black Mountain Wildflower Ramble
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Belconnen Way entry to Black Mountain Nature Reserve\, just before Caswell Drive turnoff (look for the balloons). Celebrate the diversity of spring wildflowers in the 41st annual Burbidge/Chippendale walk with Peter Ormay\, Laurie Adams\, Isobel Crawford and Jean Geue. Following the tradition set by Nancy and George Chippendale\, this will be a social occasion with a morning tea break (BYO)\, relatively easy grades and good company. It may also be sponsored by NPA\, U3A\, ANPS and Field Nats. Who knows what spring will bring this year in this very special reserve. It’s always fascinating to see how diversity and abundance differ. And there’s been strange flowering this year. All welcome. Please bring your friends\, especially those who are new to plant identification. BYO morning tea\, hat\, sunblock\, water and stout shoes. Contact Jean on 6251-1601 and please book on friendsofblackmountain@gmail.com  so we have an idea of numbers.

SUMMARY:Paul Janssens ' Managing the Parliament House landscape with biological controls'
DESCRIPTION:Parliament House is now 24 years old. It has 23 hectares of landscape\, which include the grass ramps\, 17 courtyards and 9 hectares of native gardens. The use of pesticides for insect control is difficult due to the nature of the air conditioning air intakes for the building  as well as the numbers of working staff and visitors to Parliament House. The Landscape Services Section have implemented a very successful Integrated Pest Management program and utilise biological control methods such as releasing predator insects to control the pest insects. Paul Janssens\, Assistant Director Landscape Services\, will discuss the management of the Parliamentary landscape and touch on the Integrated Pest Management program being used at Parliament House. \n  \nPaul has worked in the horticulture industry for 30 years\, including at the ANBG between 2002 and 2008 as Horticulture Manager and then Curator Living Collections. He previously worked on the Parliament House gardens from 1986 to 2002\, and has been in his current position since 2008.

SUMMARY:Dr Lydia Guja - 'Oceanic dispersal: can seeds survive and germinate under new environmental conditions'
DESCRIPTION:Charles Darwin was among the first to hypothesise\, and experiment with\, oceanic dispersal. This is the harshest dispersal vector for seeds as they must endure an extremely saline and waterlogged voyage\, are likely to be deposited hundreds of kilometres away from the parent plant\, and often need to germinate under new environmental conditions. The theory of oceanic dispersal has recently gained favour in a number of scientific fields\, yet very little research has investigated seed traits conducive to this mode of dispersal such as buoyancy\, survival\, and germination. Lydia will discuss results of recent research undertaken in WA on the oceanic dispersal and salt tolerance of native seeds. \nLydia has recently taken up the new Seed Conservation Biologist position in the CANBR and the ANBG. The Seed Biologist plays a key role in developing and monitoring the strategic direction and scientific goals of the ANBG Seed Bank\, and expanding existing seed banking and research activities. \nPrior to that Lydia Guja received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Australia. She conducted an Honours project at UWA and Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Western Australia\, investigating the seed biology and physiology of coastal plants. After graduation she spent some time at the Department of Environment and Conservation in WA where she assisted with monitoring the effects of logging and fire on regeneration and diversity in Jarrah and Karri forests of the South-West. Lydia’s PhD project (at Curtin University and Kings Park) followed on from her Honours research and continued to investigate dispersal and salt tolerance in seeds of native coastal plants. During Lydia’s time at Kings Park she also worked as a technician on several projects that investigated dormancy and germination syndromes of difficult to germinate Australian species.

SUMMARY:Stephen Speer - 'Spying eyes in America - What can we learn from the Smithsonian Institute and botanic gardens in the US'?
DESCRIPTION:Stephen was one of a group of Canberra national institutions education staff who recently visited Washington DC and New York to observe how the Smithsonian Institution engages with school students and teachers. What did they learn and will this have an impact on the Gardens? What can the Gardens learn from US botanic gardens? \nStephen is Manager Communications and Visitor Services at the ANBG. He joined the ANBG in 2007 having jumped the fence from CSIRO on Black Mountain to the Gardens. During his 18 year involvement in research he worked on projects ranging from plant/fungal pathogen ecological studies to propagation and development of Australian native plants as flowering indoor plants and simulation modelling of grazing systems.  Stephen was also member of a small team engaged to develop the public exhibits\, education and public programs for CSIRO Discovery\, which opened in May 2000.

SUMMARY:Dr Joe Miller - 'Evolutionary and spatial diversity of the Australian flora'
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year the research of the CANBR has been combining spatial data with phylogenetic (evolutionary relationships) data.  This allows researchers to identify areas in Australia that contain high  (or low) levels of phylogenetic biodiversity that may have been missed when only species counts are used to measure biodiversity.  CANBR is working closely with department agencies to apply these ideas in the conservation design system.  Joe will describe the methods used and show examples from many large Australian plant lineages\, including Acacia\, Eucalyptus\, mosses\, liverworts and hornworts. \nJoe is a Research scientist and the Research Group leader at the CANBR\, a joint venture between the CSIRO and ANBG.  His research focuses on the molecular evolution of Acacia with an interest in understanding the evolution of important  evolutionary traits of the flora.

SUMMARY:Dr John Grimshaw ‘New Trees: Recent Introductions to Cultivation’
DESCRIPTION:Visiting UK botanist Dr John Grimshaw will discuss new trees – recent introductions to cultivation\, the subject of a 2009 book\, of which he was principal author\, on trees introduced in the past 35 years. The book was sponsored by the International Dendrology Society and published by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. Canberran Dr Roger Farrow contributed some photographs of eucalypts to this book. \nJohn has been interested in plants all his life\, as both gardener and botanist. He holds a first-class degree in botany and doctorate in African forest ecology from Oxford University. African plants remain his principal botanical interest. He is\, however\, fascinated by all plants and will attempt to grow anything in the garden. The origins of garden plants are a particular fascination and he has travelled widely to see plants growing in habitat. His first book was The Gardener’s Atlas (1998) recounting the journeys plants have made from their source to our gardens.\n \nHaving also worked commercially\, John managed the historic Elwes family garden at Colesbourne Park in Gloucestershire from 2003-2012; he is currently Director of the Castle Howard Arboretum Trust in Yorkshire. John is also a member of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Advisory Committee on Nomenclature and Taxonomy\, and Woody Plant Committee.

SUMMARY:Ross Bennett ‘Reptiles and frogs of the ACT: how to stop worrying and love snakes!’
DESCRIPTION:Ross will provide an overview of our local herpetofauna\, some historical insights into their status and an opportunity to dispel some of the myths surrounding the snakes in particular. Ross will bring a couple of his ‘friends’ to illustrate some points. \nRoss has never known anything but fascination for wildlife and the environment. He came to the ACT from Victorian National Parks Service and went to combine his roles in land\, wildlife and fire management here with CSIRO and other agency wildlife programs across Australia. Somewhere along the way he was asked to write a field guide to the ACT’s frogs and reptiles by the ACT National Parks Association who published it in 1997. He then went on to fulfil another dream in the building and operation of the Australian Reptile Centre at Gold Creek. Eleven years later\, with a daughter of that age deserving his attention\, he took ‘early retirement’ and now has the time to continue his interests in wildlife combined with the travelling which was put on hold for so many years.

SUMMARY:Gerry Marantelli talks at Snakes Alive: 'Saving frogs because we MUST!'
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to hear Gerry Marantelli of the Amphibian Research Centre (ARC) in Victoria\, and for nibbles afterwards. \nOver one third of the world’s amphibians and the ecosystems they hold together are now threatened in the largest mass extinction since the dinosaurs. Gerry’s talk will cover the latest research into the problems facing frogs around the world. He will guide us through why we need frogs\, why they are now threatened\, and what progress has been made to bring our most critically endangered frog species back from the brink. \nThe ARC is dedicated to the research and conservation of Australian frogs. It is also involved in efforts to breed and preserve a number of Australia’s most endangered frogs\, including the Southern Corroboree Frog. \nCome along to the theatrette at the Australian National Botanic Gardens\, and join us afterwards for nibbles and soft drink\, and an opportunity to discuss issues with Gerry further. \nWhen: Friday 18 January 2013. \nTime: 4:30-6pm\nBookings: Call Margaret Ning on 0427 788 304. \nThis talk will follow the Snakes Alive exhibition of live reptiles and amphibians put on by the ACT Herpetological Association (open 10am-4pm on the day in the Gardens; $5 adults\, $2 kids). \nFor more information about the ARC and ACT Herpetological Association\, have a look at www.frogs.org.au and www.actha.org.au. Raffle tickets supporting Corroboree Frog research will be available at the talk should you wish to contribute.

SUMMARY:Centenary Chat: Ian Warden ‘Tiptoe through the Telopeas: Why Marion Mahony Griffin would have boycotted Floriade’
DESCRIPTION:Ian Warden\, Gang Gang columnist of the Canberra Times\, will launch the 2013 lunchtime talks program\, with a Centenary Chat on Marion Mahony Griffin’s enthusiasm for Australian native flora. January’s theme is Family and Friends in the Capital\, appropriately\, given the extent to which Marion’s enthusiasm for our native flora is shared by modern-day Canberrans; they flock to the Gardens each January to listen to music in a setting of magnificent eucalypts. \nIan Warden describes himself as a Canberra writer and humourless native plant zealot and the only person in his street growing Eucalyptus crenulata in his front garden.

SUMMARY:Centenary Chat: Jocelyn Plovits ‘The National Arboretum Canberra: relationship and synergy’
DESCRIPTION:The bushfires that ravaged Canberra in 2003 were the catalyst for the creation of the National Arboretum Canberra first envisaged by the Burley Griffins. The National Arboretum\, which will open in early 2013\, provides an opportunity to conserve threatened species\, a place for community recreation and a valuable resource for ongoing education and research.  \nUnder the Centenary theme of Cultural Diversity\, Jocelyn Plovits will address the history\, design\, challenges and successes of the project from the perspective of the Friends of the Arboretum. She will also discuss the National Arboretum’s potential for the future\, the contribution of volunteers to the success of a wonderful and exciting Arboretum and the importance of collaboration with a number of key entities\, among them\, the ANBG. \nJocelyn Plovits is Chair of the Friends of the National Arboretum.

SUMMARY:Matthew Higgins ‘Elyne Mitchell: mountain author’
DESCRIPTION:Elyne Mitchell is remembered fondly for her wildly successful Silver Brumby books from the 1950s onward.  But not only did she write children’s fiction\, Elyne also wrote a number of pioneering non-fiction works addressing Australians’ relationship with their environment.  Elyne’s passionate connection with the upper Murray and the Snowy Mountains had a fundamental influence on her and her work.  She was also a very keen skier and horse rider and she helped run the family’s Towong Hill property.  Elyne received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to literature in 1988 and Charles Sturt University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in 1993.  A year before her death in 2002 the Corryong Library was renamed in her honour.  The National Library of Australia holds her papers\, and one of the typewriters used by Mitchell is held by the National Museum of Australia. \nMatthew Higgins\, an Associate of the Centre for Historical Research at the National Museum of Australia\, has been working in Canberra as a professional historian for 30 years.  He has worked with the Australian War Memorial\, the Australian Heritage Commission\, and the National Museum of Australia.  He has completed many freelance projects (including oral history interviews for the National Library of Australia)\, and is the author of numerous articles and a number of books\, the most recent of which is Rugged beyond imagination: stories from an Australian mountain region (NMA Press 2009).  Matthew is passionate about the Australian high country and he skis and bushwalks as often as opportunity allows.
