SUMMARY:Margot Schneider ‘Fuel flammability and past fires?’
DESCRIPTION:Margot\, 2020 winner of National Parks Australia ACT scholarship\, will talk on the effect of past fire on fuel flammability\, with particular emphasis on the leaf chemistry of Eucalyptus pilularis (Blackbutt). \nAbstract \nWith climate change increasing the frequency and intensity of bushfires\, the frequency and intensity of past fires could help predict how ecosystems will respond to future fire. \nFire regimes can alter leaf chemistry and hence flammability. Margot examined leaf chemical composition at Booderee National Park\, specifically Eucalyptus pilularis\, at pre-established field sites taking into consideration Time Since Fire and Fire Frequency.  Samples were taken of leaf litter and fresh leaves.  She quantified nutrients known to affect flammability and the depletion effect of fire on soil nutrients.  \nDifferences in leaf chemistry of leaf litter and fresh leaves are attributed to low nutrient levels of Booderee soils\, as E pilularis has adapted to re-absorbs nutrients from leaves before senescence.  Margot is interested in how decreased nutrient content  as a result of fire could increase  leaf flammability\, and  raises the question of how other species adapt compared to E pilularis. \nBiography \nMargot Schneider is employed as a Research Officer at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at ANU\, where she continues with this research. She works full time at the Atlas of Living Australia in the Science and Decision Support Team based at CSIRO. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. The Friends use donations received at each talk to support Gardens’ programs and development and thank all those who have donated.  Please note: unless otherwise indicated\, talks are in the ANBG Theatrette. \nBookings are a good idea in order to reserve a seat at the talks you wish to attend; some talks book out very quickly.  Bookings can be made from the Friday before the talk until Wednesday night before the talk or until seating limits are reached.  \nBooking Link https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCZ \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. SUMMARY:Dr Pep Canadell ‘The rise of mega forest fires under climate change and what to do about it.’
DESCRIPTION:Pep\, a Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO\, will discuss recent trend analyses on fire activity in Australian forests and their close links to human-caused climate change\, along with limited options to reduce the rising impacts of wildfires. \nAbstract \nAustralia has always had big forest fires\, as it has had floods and droughts. However\, something is changing in ways that we haven’t quite seen before. Pep will discuss recent trend analyses on fire activity in Australian forests and show that the observed increased in both long-term trends of burned area and megafires are closely linked to human-caused climate change. We have some\, but limited\, options to reduce the rising impacts of wildfires\, beyond doing our global share of emission reductions. \nBiography \nDr. Pep Canadell is a chief research scientist at the CSIRO Climate Science Centre and the executive director of the Global Carbon Project\, a global consortium of scientists studying the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions in the earth system. He also studies the response of terrestrial ecosystems to rapid climate change and extremes events\, including fire. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. SUMMARY:Alex McLachlan ‘Eyebrights at risk of climate change?’
DESCRIPTION:Alex will present results from his research project on alpine and sub-alpine eyebrights (Euphrasia). He is improving understanding of their dormancy\, germination\, and what effect climate change might have on these regeneration processes. \nAbstract \nWith the Australian alpine bioregion predicted to increase in temperature by up to 4°C by 2100\, and snow cover reducing by up to 85%\, impacts on flora are expected to occur. Eyebrights (Euphrasia) are a hemi-parasitic genus that is thought to rely on cold temperatures to alleviate seed dormancy to allow successful germination. This eye-catching genus is common in the Australian alps where walkers may have noticed the flowers in spring. The plants can help reduce erosion and naturally control grass populations while also providing resources for pollinators. This study aims to determine the impacts of increased temperature on Eyebrights seed dormancy\, germination\, and viability. \nBiography \nAlex McLachlan completed his undergraduate course Bachelor of Environmental science at the end of 2020 then worked at the seed bank in 2021\, further developing his passion for native flora and conservation. He is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) finishing in mid-November. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. SUMMARY:51st Black Mountain spring wildflower ramble - BOOKED OUT
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the spring flowering on beautiful Black Mountain with a social ramble for wildflower lovers in the tradition established by Nancy Burbidge\, and continued by George Chippendale and Jean Geue. Discover the surprising diversity of tiny orchids\, bush peas\, wattles and billy buttons on easy bush tracks with experienced guides and good company. \nAll springs are not the same. The pattern remains\, but timing and abundance vary with the weather; after the rain we have had this year we are anticipating a special display of flowers. \nFriends of Black Mountain welcomes everyone\, be they experts or those who have never slowed down to see the somewhat cryptic diversity. We plan that there will be several guides\, who will take different directions. \nThere will be some books for sale\, including Black Mountain a natural history of a Canberra icon by Ian Fraser and Rosemary Purdie\, and booklets about local plants. \nMeet at Belconnen Way entry just before Caswell Drive turnoff – watch for balloons or banners (see Google Maps at https://goo.gl/maps/sRf4T1LMYbKuTS5N9).\nPlease allow time to park and walk to the meeting point before 9:30am. \nBYO morning tea\, water\, hat\, sunblock and stout shoes. \nGold Coins donation. \nBOOKED OUT  No further bookings will be taken \nBackground: The Friends of the ANBG have been sponsoring the traditional Burbidge/Chippendale Black Mountain Spring Wildflower Ramble since 1999\, and members have always responded enthusiastically. See the report of last year’s 50th walk.

SUMMARY:Stuart Rae ‘Little Eagle’
DESCRIPTION:The Little Eagle Research Group has amassed a wealth of data on the breeding ecology and range of the eagle\, and a botanical perspective helps explain the bird’s distribution. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coin donation. \nBooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCO \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. Some summaries or PowerPoint presentations of Thursday talks are available to Friends at the ANBG library. A donation to the Friends for the use of this material will be gratefully accepted. Please direct queries about the talks to the Thursday Talks Team: email talks@friendsanbg.org.au \nThe talks are in line with COVID-19 guidelines which can change rapidly. \nAbstract \nStuart\, a visitor at the Research School of Biology\, ANU\, has been studying Little Eagles in the Canberra area for the past three years as part of the Little Eagle Research Group. And the group have amassed a wealth of data on the breeding ecology and range of the eagle. The birds are widespread in the ACT\, although easily overlooked. By studying the ecology of the species\, we can understand why the birds use what habitats\, hence a botanical perspective helps explain the bird’s distribution. \nBiography \nStuart\, a visitor at the Research School of Biology\, ANU\, has been studying Little Eagles in the Canberra area for the past three years as part of the Little Eagle Research Group.

SUMMARY:Professor Simon Haberle ‘What you never knew about poo!’
DESCRIPTION:Simon\, from ANU\, will tell a fascinating story of tiny fungi that live on dung and what they tell us about giant animals that roamed the earth. \nAbstract \nThe study of microscopic spores that are produced in abundance by fungi growing on dung (coprophilous fungi) and preserved in sedimentary records has emerged as a new and significant indicator of herbivore population dynamics and the extinction of megafauna during the Late Quaternary. The cause and timing of the extinction of megafauna in Australia is hotly debated with the primary drivers considered to be one of\, or a combination of\, climate\, human impacts and geomagnetic excursions. In this talk I will present the latest evidence derived from sedimentary records from different environments around Australia that show a remarkable decline in dung fungi abundance around 45\,000-41\,000 years before present. I will explore the reasons for this decline in dung fungi and consider the nature of human impact on the Australian environment during the late Quaternary. \nBiography \nProf Simon Haberle is a palynologist (pollen expert) and the Director of the ANU School of Culture\, History and Language. He applies his expertise in pollen analysis across a wide range of research fields from archaeology to aerobiology and has worked in field sites around the Southern Hemisphere. He is also actively developing e-Research tools and citizen science projects to help engage the public in science. He is currently using his knowledge of coprophilous fungi spores to explore the dynamics of megafauna populations through time. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coin donation.
