SUMMARY:51st Black Mountain spring wildflower ramble - BOOKED OUT
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the spring flowering on beautiful Black Mountain with a social ramble for wildflower lovers in the tradition established by Nancy Burbidge\, and continued by George Chippendale and Jean Geue. Discover the surprising diversity of tiny orchids\, bush peas\, wattles and billy buttons on easy bush tracks with experienced guides and good company. \nAll springs are not the same. The pattern remains\, but timing and abundance vary with the weather; after the rain we have had this year we are anticipating a special display of flowers. \nFriends of Black Mountain welcomes everyone\, be they experts or those who have never slowed down to see the somewhat cryptic diversity. We plan that there will be several guides\, who will take different directions. \nThere will be some books for sale\, including Black Mountain a natural history of a Canberra icon by Ian Fraser and Rosemary Purdie\, and booklets about local plants. \nMeet at Belconnen Way entry just before Caswell Drive turnoff – watch for balloons or banners (see Google Maps at https://goo.gl/maps/sRf4T1LMYbKuTS5N9).\nPlease allow time to park and walk to the meeting point before 9:30am. \nBYO morning tea\, water\, hat\, sunblock and stout shoes. \nGold Coins donation. \nBOOKED OUT  No further bookings will be taken \nBackground: The Friends of the ANBG have been sponsoring the traditional Burbidge/Chippendale Black Mountain Spring Wildflower Ramble since 1999\, and members have always responded enthusiastically. See the report of last year’s 50th walk.

SUMMARY:Stuart Rae ‘Little Eagle’
DESCRIPTION:The Little Eagle Research Group has amassed a wealth of data on the breeding ecology and range of the eagle\, and a botanical perspective helps explain the bird’s distribution. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coin donation. The Friends use donations received at each talk to support Gardens’ programs and development and thank all those who have donated.  Please note: unless otherwise indicated\, talks are in the ANBG Theatrette. \nBookings are a good idea in order to reserve a seat at the talks you wish to attend; some talks book out very quickly.  Bookings can be made from the Friday before the talk until Wednesday night before the talk or until seating limits are reached.  \nBooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCO \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. Some summaries or PowerPoint presentations of Thursday talks are available to Friends at the ANBG library. A donation to the Friends for the use of this material will be gratefully accepted. Please direct queries about the talks to the Thursday Talks Team: email talks@friendsanbg.org.au \nThe talks are in line with COVID-19 guidelines which can change rapidly. \nAbstract \nStuart\, a visitor at the Research School of Biology\, ANU\, has been studying Little Eagles in the Canberra area for the past three years as part of the Little Eagle Research Group. And the group have amassed a wealth of data on the breeding ecology and range of the eagle. The birds are widespread in the ACT\, although easily overlooked. By studying the ecology of the species\, we can understand why the birds use what habitats\, hence a botanical perspective helps explain the bird’s distribution. \nBiography \nStuart\, a visitor at the Research School of Biology\, ANU\, has been studying Little Eagles in the Canberra area for the past three years as part of the Little Eagle Research Group.

SUMMARY:Professor Simon Haberle ‘What you never knew about poo!’
DESCRIPTION:Simon\, from ANU\, will tell a fascinating story of tiny fungi that live on dung and what they tell us about giant animals that roamed the earth. \nAbstract \nThe study of microscopic spores that are produced in abundance by fungi growing on dung (coprophilous fungi) and preserved in sedimentary records has emerged as a new and significant indicator of herbivore population dynamics and the extinction of megafauna during the Late Quaternary. The cause and timing of the extinction of megafauna in Australia is hotly debated with the primary drivers considered to be one of\, or a combination of\, climate\, human impacts and geomagnetic excursions. In this talk I will present the latest evidence derived from sedimentary records from different environments around Australia that show a remarkable decline in dung fungi abundance around 45\,000-41\,000 years before present. I will explore the reasons for this decline in dung fungi and consider the nature of human impact on the Australian environment during the late Quaternary. \nBiography \nProf Simon Haberle is a palynologist (pollen expert) and the Director of the ANU School of Culture\, History and Language. He applies his expertise in pollen analysis across a wide range of research fields from archaeology to aerobiology and has worked in field sites around the Southern Hemisphere. He is also actively developing e-Research tools and citizen science projects to help engage the public in science. He is currently using his knowledge of coprophilous fungi spores to explore the dynamics of megafauna populations through time. \nBooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCN \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. SUMMARY:Ian Fraser\, ‘How Did Australian Birds Get English Names?’
DESCRIPTION:Ian Fraser\, a local conservationist\, says the stories of these name creations can be intriguing\, funny\, erroneous and sometimes downright ridiculous\, telling us more about us than the birds. This talk is a celebration of birds\, words and history. \nAbstract \nThe answer to how did Australian birds get English names is from many and varied sources\, including Indigenous (though sadly not many)\, Old English\, Portuguese\, Malay\, French\, Malagasy\, Tupi-Gairani and many others. Many more were invented because so much was unfamiliar; the stories of these creations can be intriguing\, funny\, erroneous and sometimes downright ridiculous. Names usually tell us more about us than the birds. This talk is a celebration of birds\, words and history. \nBiography \nIan Fraser has spent the last 40-plus years in Canberra\, as naturalist\, conservationist\, award-winning author\, ABC broadcaster\, educator and tour guide. The second\, revised\, edition of Australian Bird Names; origins and meanings (co-authored with Jeannie Gray) was published by CSIRO in 2019. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. \nBooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCL \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. Some summaries or PowerPoint presentations of Thursday talks are available to Friends at the ANBG library. A donation to the Friends for the use of this material will be gratefully accepted. SUMMARY:Wattle Walk - Which Wattles will we see? Early\, Silver\, Ploughshare\, more?
DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate green and gold by enjoying a ramble and learning more about the different Acacia (Wattles) on Black Mountain after wetter years with local plant ecologist\, Dr Michael Doherty.. Michael has done research about Acacia and other native plants and how they cope with fire and drought. Maybe the weather we have had in recent years is part of that? \nThe floral emblem for Australia is Acacia pycnantha (Golden Wattle). It does not grow in Black Mountain Nature Reserve\, but several other acacia species make September a great wattle month for us. \nThe ramble will be on rough uneven ground with some steep sections. \nSome relevant booklets will be for sale at the event\, too. \nMeet: Frith Road\, Acton. Near the electricity sub-station. Look for banner(s).\nBring: Friends and family. Water. Snacks if you wish. \nGold coin donation \nBooking is essential: If you are planning to come\, please provide your name and phone number to friendsofblackmountain@gmail.com\, or phone Linda (0437 298 711) or Libby (6296 1936). It helps us to let you know if arrangements need to change unexpectedly (e.g. adverse weather). \nLinda Beveridge\n	Convenor\,\n	Friends of Black Mountain

SUMMARY:Dr Tim Barrows\, ‘The last Ice Age in Canberra and at Lake Mungo’
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Tim will describe new work on Black Mountain in Canberra and the Southern Tablelands to date and describe the lowest elevation of periglacial activity\, the extent of which has been the subject of controversy. \nAbstract \nFar from the vast ice sheets of North America\, Europe and Antarctica\, Australia experienced a cold and dry ice age. Only small glaciers developed on the Main Range of Kosciusko. However\, the action of frost\, ice and snow were far more extensive. The extent of this periglacial zone has been the subject of controversy but knowing its extent is crucial for calculating how cold the last ice age was. In this talk\, Tim will describe new work on Black Mountain in Canberra and the Southern Tablelands to date and describe the lowest elevation of periglacial activity. Periglacial activity in the mountains also had an impact on the plains. Greater snow storage\, lower evaporation and higher runoff resulted in high seasonal discharges that filled lakes in Western NSW. Tim will also describe recent work to determine the environmental history at Lake Mungo. The lake level fluctuated up to 10 m and dried out permanently at the end of the ice age. \nBiography \nTim Barrows is a Professor at the University of Portsmouth and a Future Fellow at the University of Wollongong. He completed his studies at the ANU and has worked both in the USA and the UK. He has also worked in New Zealand\, Papua New Guinea\, Africa\, Europe\, North America and the Arctic. Tim has published 71 papers in the fields of palaeoclimatology\, palaeoceanography\, geomorphology and geochronology. He also maintains a science blog called 4Dlandscapes. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation.
