SUMMARY:Dr Tim Barrows\, ‘The last Ice Age in Canberra and at Lake Mungo’
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Tim will describe new work on Black Mountain in Canberra and the Southern Tablelands to date and describe the lowest elevation of periglacial activity\, the extent of which has been the subject of controversy. \nAbstract \nFar from the vast ice sheets of North America\, Europe and Antarctica\, Australia experienced a cold and dry ice age. Only small glaciers developed on the Main Range of Kosciusko. However\, the action of frost\, ice and snow were far more extensive. The extent of this periglacial zone has been the subject of controversy but knowing its extent is crucial for calculating how cold the last ice age was. In this talk\, Tim will describe new work on Black Mountain in Canberra and the Southern Tablelands to date and describe the lowest elevation of periglacial activity. Periglacial activity in the mountains also had an impact on the plains. Greater snow storage\, lower evaporation and higher runoff resulted in high seasonal discharges that filled lakes in Western NSW. Tim will also describe recent work to determine the environmental history at Lake Mungo. The lake level fluctuated up to 10 m and dried out permanently at the end of the ice age. \nBiography \nTim Barrows is a Professor at the University of Portsmouth and a Future Fellow at the University of Wollongong. He completed his studies at the ANU and has worked both in the USA and the UK. He has also worked in New Zealand\, Papua New Guinea\, Africa\, Europe\, North America and the Arctic. Tim has published 71 papers in the fields of palaeoclimatology\, palaeoceanography\, geomorphology and geochronology. He also maintains a science blog called 4Dlandscapes. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. The Friends use donations received at each talk to support Gardens’ programs and development and thank all those who have donated.  Please note: unless otherwise indicated\, talks are in the ANBG Theatrette. \nBookings are a good idea in order to reserve a seat at the talks you wish to attend; some talks book out very quickly.  Bookings can be made from the Friday before the talk until Wednesday night before the talk or until seating limits are reached.  \nBooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCJ \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. SUMMARY:Growing Friends 'Getting ready for Spring' plant sale
DESCRIPTION:Canberra gardeners won’t have to wait until spring for the next Growing Friends plant sale! The next plant sale will be on August 27th\,  giving you time to prepare for the spring planting. \nThe most recent sale was in November 2019\, nearly three years ago. Since then\, there has been a severe hailstorm which damaged the propagation area and two extended periods in March/April 2020 and September/October 2021 when the Gardens were closed because of COVID lockdowns. However\, the Growing Friends have not been idle during the past three years. By the end of August\, we will have a large number of plants ready for planting in early spring\, as the ground starts to warm up. Some of the plants have been potted on into larger pots. \nA complete list of plants available\, and a description of each\, is now available for download (PDF\, 286KB). Most plants are in 100mm pots and will cost $6 each but the larger 175mm pots will cost $10 each. \nWhen: Saturday\, 27th August 2022\nTime: 8.30 am – 11.00 am or earlier if sold out\nWhere: Small car park behind the Crosbie Morrison Centre\, Australian National Botanic Gardens

SUMMARY:Meena Sritheran ‘What makes plants rare?’
DESCRIPTION:Meena is looking at how fire\, soil properties and plant interactions may play a role in driving the rarity of species\, and how this knowledge would aid conservation management of rare species and ecosystems. \nAbstract \nDetermining what makes a plant species rare has been a fundamental and alluring question in ecology and conservation. A few species are highly abundant in most plant communities\, but many more species are rare. This pattern represents one of the most consistently observed phenomena in ecology. However\, research in ecology and conservation have still yet to come to a clear understanding in determining what makes a plant rare\, species rare and why plants can become rare across time and space. Meena’s work presents findings from her PhD thesis\, attempting look at how fire\, soil properties and plant interactions may play a role in driving the rarity of species\, and how we can use this knowledge to aid scientists and practitioners in developing better management strategies to conserve rare species and ecosystems.” \nBiography \nMeena Sritharan is a currently PhD student in plant ecology at the Australian National University looking at what makes plants rare. She has worked previously on different research projects at UNSW Sydney in the realm of plants. Alongside her research\, she has worked as a science communicator at the Australian Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. When not conducting research\, She loves to spend her time botanising on long bushwalks\, baking something challenging\, and crocheting things large and small. \nBooking link: https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCI \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. SUMMARY:Dr Liz Milla\, ‘Bee patrols: How bees and other pollinating insects can help us monitor and protect Australia’s biodiversity’
DESCRIPTION:Liz\, Research Scientist from CSIRO\, will show how DNA from pollen is being used to identify the pollen species carried by pollinating insects and how this helps to monitor and manage plant and insect species and to detect potential biosecurity threats. \nAbstract \nMany insects\, particularly bees\, provide pollination services that are crucial ecosystem services. The pollen that insects collect during foraging can also tell us a lot about the surrounding environment. In this talk\, Liz will show how we are using DNA from pollen to identify the pollen species carried by pollinating insects and how this information can help us monitor and manage plant and insect species and help detect potential biosecurity threats. \nBiography \nDr Liz Milla is a Research Scientist with the Environomics FSP Mapping Pollinator Networks project at CSIRO. Liz’s current research uses ecological and genomic tools to reveal interactions between plants and their insect pollinators. Her research on pollinator networks will contribute to biodiversity identification and help detect keystone plant and insect species for targeted conservation and management strategies. \nBooking Link https://www.trybooking.com/CAWCG \nThe Friends of the ANBG thank the speakers who volunteer their time and talents to further the knowledge of all attending events in the Gardens. Some summaries or PowerPoint presentations of Thursday talks are available to Friends at the ANBG library. A donation to the Friends for the use of this material will be gratefully accepted. Please direct queries about the talks to the Thursday Talks Team: email talks@friendsanbg.org.au \nThe talks are in line with COVID-19 guidelines which can change rapidly.

SUMMARY:Dr Penny Olsen 'The Norfolk Island Morepork: rebuilding a population from the last survivor’
DESCRIPTION:Penny\, an Honorary Professor in Division of Ecology and Evolution\, ANU led a group that found only one Morepork owl on Norfolk Island in 1986. What to do? A recovery program began and today a small population persists. \nAbstract \nThe Norfolk Island owl is a member of the group of smallish owls referred to as boobooks or moreporks. In 1986\, concerned that the owl had not been seen for some years\, Penny organised a group of friends to visit the island and conduct a search. They discovered that only one individual remained. What do you do with one owl? There were many decisions to be made and not a few hurdles to jump\, but a recovery program began.  Today\, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts\, a small population persists. \nBiography \nPenny Olsen is an Honorary Professor in the Division of Ecology and Evolution at the Australian National University. After a career as a research scientist\, she now mostly writes about natural history subjects. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. SUMMARY:Lori Gould ‘Latham Snipe along the flyway’
DESCRIPTION:Lori\, Principal of GrassRoots Environmental\, will describe the surveys and research into the Latham Snipes movement and migration between Australia and Japan. \nAbstract \nLatham’s snipe (Gallinago hardwickii) is a medium-sized\, long-billed\, migratory snipe of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. The Latham’s Snipe project began in south-west Victoria in 2014 with a series of local surveys aimed at understanding habitat use in urban areas. The program expanded in subsequent years to include other regions across eastern Australia\, and the initiation of a capture-based program at Jerrabomberra Wetlands and in Japan. The capture-based program involved attaching satellite\, geolocator and radio tracking devices to Snipe in order to obtain movement and migration information\, as well as the identification of important habitat. Currently\, there are two key research objectives that guide the Latham’s Snipe Project (1) to monitor changes in abundance and distribution in Australia\, and (2) to improve our knowledge about movements patterns of Latham’s Snipe at local and global scales. This information feeds into our understanding of migratory birds more broadly. \nBiography \nLori Gould has more than 25 years’ experience in environmental management and runs an environmental consulting business – GrassRoots Environmental specialising in natural resource management\, particularly riparian rehabilitation\, landscape planning and community engagement. Lori holds a Master’s Degree in Integrated Water Management\, a Post Graduate Certificate in River Restoration and Management\, an Environmental Science Degree and Associate Diploma in Animal Science. Lori is also a Fellow of the Peter Cullen Trust. Lori started a PhD on Migratory Bird Ecology in March 2021 focussing on Latham’s Snipe at Jerrabomberra Wetlands after being involved with research on Snipe over the past 5 years. \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November in the Gardens’ Theatrette. Talks last for 1 hour. Admission is by gold coins donation. The Friends use the ‘gold’ coins donations received at each activity to support Gardens’ programs and development and thank all those who have donated.
