SUMMARY:Dr Liz Truswell ‘Marie Stopes - palaeobotanist extraordinaire!’
DESCRIPTION:Marie Stopes was one of the most flamboyant and influential figures of the early twentieth century. Liz will discuss Marie’s wide-ranging contributions to palaeobotany\, and the way these were over-shadowed by her later career on birth control and the role of women in marriage\, published in 1918. \nAbstract \nBiography \n	Dr Liz Truswell was born in Kalgoorlie but mostly grew up in Perth.  She is a geoscientist\, a palynologist/palaeobotanist\, holding a B.Sc from UWA and a PhD from Cambridge. During post-doctoral study in the USA she became involved with the early stages of the International Deep Sea Drilling Project\, voyaging on the first cruise to drill a number of sea floor sites close to Antarctica. Returning to Australia she worked for what is now Geoscience Australia as a palaeontologist/environmental scientist before transferring to the ANU as a Visiting Fellow.  She has published papers on geological timescales\, palaeoenvironments and aspects of the vegetation history of Australia and Antarctica. Her 2019 book deals with evidence for the early Antarctic icecap\, the human history of early voyages in the Southern Ocean\, and the nature and demise of the higher vegetation of Antarctica.  She was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1985. \nBooking Link: https://www.trybooking.com/CGTHR \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome donations by gold coins\, notes\, or electronically. SUMMARY:Botanical Art Group 16th Annual Exhibition - "High Country Natives"
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the ANBG’s Botanic Art Group will hold its 16th annual exhibition and sale at the Visitor Centre Gallery\, with the theme ‘High Country Natives’. \nMost of the works will be on sale\, with a proportion of the proceeds donated to the Friends of the ANBG to support the Gardens. Several works will be chosen to be donated by the Friends to the Gardens’ permanent collection. As in previous years\, there will also be a work to be won by the lucky winner of a raffle\, as well as a range of greeting cards. \nThis year’s exhibition theme of ‘High Country Natives’ has inspired a variety of approaches to composition including landscapes of habitat of native flora in unique alpine regions\, as well as traditional compositions of native plants from alpine and other areas. \nFor purposes of this exhibition ‘high country natives’ has been defined as Australian natives that grow in alpine\, sub-alpine\, and montane and tableland geographical regions.  \nMembers of the Friends are invited to a special preview prior to the opening of the exhibition. The preview\, when all paintings are for sale\, commences at 2pm on Friday 7 April. The exhibition will be open to the public on Saturday 8 April until 7 May.  We hope you will find the time to pay us a visit to see the exhibition at the Visitor Gallery\, either at the preview or at another time. In previous years we have found many paintings sell quickly. Don’t be disappointed; take the opportunity to visit the exhibition at the Visitors Gallery early.

SUMMARY:Dr Peter Thrall ‘Why Digitise Biological Collections?’
DESCRIPTION:The presentation by Peter\, from the National Research Collections Australia\, will focus on digitisation projects and added value that these efforts can bring to biological specimen collections for use in research from about 15 million specimens. \nAbstract \n	CSIRO’s biological collections are aiming to significantly accelerate the creation of digital assets for use in research from its 15 million specimens. To do this\, they are investing heavily in mobilising and securing the collections through: a) physical infrastructure; b) digital infrastructure; and c) resources needed to integrate digitisation and analytics to value-add and deliver impact from the collections. For example\, they are currently imaging their extensive insect type specimen collection\, microscope slides and egg clutch collections. We are also using automated methods to rapidly image the entire herbarium collection with Picturae. Their high-throughput digitisation of insects utilises crowd-sourcing transcription with DigiVol. To accelerate this work further they are looking at several emerging technologies to assist with automating the imaging of their extensive insect collection. \nThe digitisation workflows and imaging pipelines are planned with collection activities to complement and benefit from the move to a new collection facility\, and they are in the process of improving the integration of this critical digital infrastructure. As part of this effort\, they are bringing collection data management together under one unified central management system. \nIn summary\, they are bringing together the resources needed to build a dedicated cross-collection team trained to curatorial standards with specific expertise in digitisation\, data systems\, digital analytics in AI/ML and imaging. This presentation will focus on their digitisation projects and added value that these efforts can bring to biological specimen collections.  \nBiography \n	Dr Peter Thrall is currently Group Leader for Digitisation & Informatics within the National Research Collections Australia. He is an evolutionary ecologist with broad interests in the population biology of host-microbe interactions. His research addresses two conceptually related areas\, one aimed at understanding how spatial\, demographic and genetic processes drive the coevolution of host resistance and pathogen infectivity\, and the other on plant-soil mutualist interactions (e.g.\, in the context of invasion processes). His most recent work focuses on the application of eco-evolutionary principles to predicting and managing biotic interactions in agro-ecological systems. \nThe Booking Link is: https://www.trybooking.com/CELUV \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November.  Talks last for 1 hour.  We welcome a gold coins donation. SUMMARY:Wayne Haslam ‘The emerging Truffle Industry in Australia and its Canberra Region Focus’
DESCRIPTION:Wayne\, of Bluefrog Truffles\, will talk about his experience and understanding of the cultivation of truffles in the Canberra Region\, and his involvement in the Australian Truffle Industry. \n\n \n \n Photos: (top) Wayne finds truffle and dog ready to hunt truffles 2023-03-05\n(below) Truffle to be proud of 2023-03-05. (Photographer: Paul Henderson-Kelly). \n \n\nAbstract \nTruffles have been around for more than 90 million years and there are many hundreds of truffle species in the world. They mature in winter and provide a winter food source for forest dwelling animals. \nTruffle production is a relatively new and emerging export industry in Australia\, yet in 20 years we have become the fourth largest producer of black truffle (Tuber melanosporum)\, in the world\, providing a southern winter crop for northern summers. \nAfter more than 40 years’ experience as an engineer and project manager in Australia and  developing countries\, Wayne has devoted his ‘leisure years’ to truffle growing. Wayne will talk about his experience and understanding of the cultivation of truffles in the Canberra Region\, and his involvement in the Australian Truffle Industry. \nBiography \nAfter 10 years as an engineer in Australian major construction projects\, (e.g. SMEC\, Wingecarribee Dam\, Yass Bypass)\,  and 23 years plus on International Development Agency Projects in the Pacific\, Asia\, and Africa\, Wayne retired\, but he needed an activity to keep a work-driven soul busy. \nIn 2001 he elected to build a house and grow truffles on a 63 acre bare property near Sutton. Over a seven-year period he planted 1800 truffle-inoculated oak trees\, Quercus robur\, Quercus ilex\, and hazelnuts (Corylus). \nThe family uses contract dogs for hunting and harvesting from June to August. \nIn 2006 Wayne established what is now the Australian Truffle Industry Association\, in 2009 the Canberra Region Truffle Festival\, and in 2018 the NSW/ACT Truffle Marketing Corporation. The corporation is developing International markets\, and half the growers are in the Canberra Region. \nThe booking link is: https://www.trybooking.com/CELUU \nLunchtime talks are held at 12.30 pm every Thursday from February to November. Talks last for 1 hour. We welcome a gold coin donation. The Friends use donations received at each talk to support Gardens’ programs and development and thank all those who have donated.
