Pollination and pollinators - statistics. Information from Melbourne Museum's 'Bugs Alive' exhibition, February 2016. (Trish Munro). Added 17 February 2016
- Colourful language – it’s how Aussie birds and flowers ‘speak' "In Australia, honeyeaters are far and away the most abundant and important nectar-feeding birds, so also the most important avian pollinators of flowers. What effect has their visual perception had on the evolution of colour among the flowers they visit?" The Conversation, 26 February 2014. Tony Lawson. Added 23 March 2014
- Flowers pick birds over insects New research has shown that certain Australian native flowers have shifted away from using insects as pollinators and evolved their flower colour to the red hues favoured by birds. "Spencer Barrett works in the field of plant reproductive biology. He explains that plants reproduce using a range of different methods. He studies evolutionary transitions in sexual systems. Even closely related species can employ different methods of reproduction....." (Tony Lawson). Just for your information, one of the Eupomatia bennettii's in the gully has a ripening fruit so it looks like the weevils have done their job...
Anticipating viable seed as cutting material is very limited for this species...
