Thursday, 21 July 2022 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Damien, of Australian Seed Bank Partnership, will illustrate some of the efforts by people from Seed Banks and botanic gardens in burnt areas and the unanticipated complexities during COVID-19 restrictions.

The 2019/2020 Australian bushfires were unprecedented in their scope and occurrence in many previously unburnt areas, including rainforests of eastern Australia. Seed banks and botanic gardens responded to the impacts of these fires with botanical expertise, field work, research and restoration of heavily impacted areas. This talk will illustrate some of these efforts and the unanticipated complexities of doing so during COVID-19 restrictions.

Damian Wrigley is the National Coordinator of the Australian Seed Bank Partnership; Australia’s National Focal Point for the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation under the Convention on Biological Diversity; and the Oceania Representative to the CITES Plants Committee. Damian is hosted by the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
