Liz Dennis is an eminent plant molecular biologist and a CSIRO Fellow in the Division of Agriculture, CSIRO in Canberra. She is also a Distinguished Professor at University of Technology, Sydney. She leads a team of research workers studying the molecular basis of hybrid vigour. She holds a BSc (Hons I) and a PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia, and is author or editor of more than 300 distinguished publications. Liz was elected to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in1987 and to the Australian Academy of Science in 1995. |

It is 400 years this year since the 700 tonne Dutch East-India Company vessel 'Eendracht' under Skipper Dirk Hartog chanced upon our continent's west coast as the first European vessel to visit it. There is an opportunity here to brush up on what we already know about this historically-important early visit, how and why it happened and what its relevance can be argued to be. |

Dr James Petrie is a Research Scientist at CSIRO in the Plant Oil Engineering group. He is best known for his role in engineering canola seed to accumulate the long-chain omega-3 oils commonly found in fish oil. James also leads a project which aims for step-change productivity increase in plant oil yield by producing triacylglycerol in plant leaves and stems rather than seed alone. |

This trip offers an optional tour of the Gardens; opportunities to take photographs within the Gardens; and time to look around at your own pace. This is a full day excursion. Doug is a retired diplomat with a long fascination in natural history, ornithology and how things in nature are connected. He is an ANBG educator, volunteer guide and member of the Thursday Talks’ committee. In 2015 Doug Laing slowly travelled overland from Cairns to Cape York and dipped a toe into the waters of the Torres Strait. In this talk, which focuses primarily on the birds and flora of the region, he considers some of the hopes, challenges and contradictions affecting the Cape’s biodiversity during a time of dynamic change, including in land use and tenure. |
