In the 1930s, Canberra residents, arriving mainly from Melbourne, tried to recreate the environments left behind in their new temporary camps and settlements and quarter acre and larger blocks north and south of the Molonglo Rover. Helen will tell stories of individual families’ experiences and describe how the growing community helped each other as its members confronted the effects of the climate and clay soils. |

A one-day driving tour, guided by Rosemary Purdie, to the Brindabella Mountains to see how plants there have recovered after the fires. We'll stop en route at the lower Cotter catchment, Picadilly Circus area, Bulls Head and Mount Franklin to look at vegetation communities including Alpine Ash, Snow Gum forest and Snow Gum woodland. Marlena spent twelve years supporting husband, Michael, in his roles as Governor of Western Australia and then as Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. Their vice-regal duties included 24 formal visits overseas, to attend the Danish royal wedding, Pope John Paul’s funeral, Prince Charles’s wedding, the coronation of the King of Tonga and a host of other amazing events. Marlena is looking forward to sharing some of her memories with you. Marlena was previously Patron of the Friends and is now Vice-Patron. |
Lecture: Crop Wild Relatives – ‘Adapting agriculture to climate change’ – Dr Michiel van Slageren | Monday, 14 October 2013 - 12:30pm |
Michiel van Slageren will deliver a talk on current work around adaptation of agriculture in changing climates. The Millennium Seed Bank, Kew is collaborating with Global Crop Diversity Trust (and others) on a project called ‘Adapting agriculture to climate change’. The main objective of the project is to collect, protect and prepare the wild relatives of the world’s most important food crops, in a form that plant breeders can readily use to produce varieties adapted to future climatic conditions. |
