Speaker: Dr Rosemary Purdie, Ecologist

Talk summary: Rosemary will give a brief summary of how vegetation is described, classified and mapped and then give an overview of the different types and locations of vegetation in the Territory.

Excursion to the National Gallery with Robert Deane where we will be shown a display of original botanical photographs, some dating back to 1850's. Meet at the gallery at 10.30. As only 16 people can attend it is first in, best dressed. More details later. For ANBG Friends only.

Kay Johnston 'Heritage Chinese Gardens' Thursday, 29 May 2014 - 12:30pm

Kay will introduce people to a brief history of classical Scholar Gardens, most commonly known in Australia as “Chinese” gardens. In their planning and design they combine elements of Chinese history, Daoist thought, philosophy, symbolism, literature and poetry, and, of course, the landscape planning and design, and careful selection of plants, that has made them appreciated and enjoyed for centuries. Pictures from the Suzhou gardens will be shown as examples.


Rosemary Purdie 'Kamchatka Revisited: Plant Life on the Edge' Thursday, 22 May 2014 - 12:30pm

Kamchatka peninsula in Far Eastern Russia has a landscape dominated by 30 active and 250+ inactive volcanoes. Its past and present volcanic activity, juxtaposed with its latitude and altitudinal variation plus long winters and short spring-summer seasons, can make survival challenging for plants. In this talk Rosemary will discuss these challenges, drawing on her travels there in 2011 and during a return visit in 2013 that included spending time on/in some very active volcanoes.

Discover Australian eucalypt stories on a self-guided Eucalypt trail, or take a free guided walk to celebrate Fascination of Plants Day.

Pick up your Eucalypt trail brochure from the Visitor Centre. Free guided walks depart 11.00 am and 2.00 pm daily.

Dennis Ayliffe 'The Realm of the Polar Bear' Thursday, 15 May 2014 - 12:30pm

Dennis will discuss some of the fauna, flora and geography of a rarely-visited area in the Arctic around the Svalbard Archipelago, north of Iceland and west of Greenland.

Julie McEnery 'An Artist in Tropical North Queensland' Thursday, 8 May 2014 - 12:30pm

Julie will speak on the development of her Offshoots works and her relationship with the Cairns Botanic Gardens, features of which are depicted in her work, including the ever-popular Amorphophallus titanum.
