If you love native plants and enjoy drawing and painting, then the Botanic Art Groups are for you.
We meet to paint and draw Australian plants in the wonderful environment of the Gardens, in an informal and friendly atmosphere.
We are a group of artists who have a special interest in Australian native plants. We are privileged to be able to portray plants from every state and territory. Some of these plants may be otherwise inaccessible to other artists, due to their remote habitat or their rarity.
Artists of all levels of experience can join the Group. There is no formal teaching or mentoring, but the atmosphere is relaxed and everyone is happy to share their experiences.
There is no cost to join the Group, but you must be a member of the Friends.
There are currently three group sessions:
- Group 1 – second Thursday of each month
- Group 2 – fourth Wednesday of each month
- Group 3 - second Saturday of each month (9:15 am to 2 pm)
All three groups currently meet in the morning, usually from 9 am to 2 pm. Members are notified of the venue by email before each session.
As the number of members of BAG has increased and the second Thursday and fourth Wednesday groups are so well attended, a new group is now meeting on the second Saturday of the month. This is primarily for those who work during the week.
Please feel free to drop in on any BAG meeting and have a look at what the members are doing.
We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the exhibition of botanical artwork at the Gardens this year. A special preview has been arranged for Friends on Friday 17 March from 1.00pm to 4.30pm. The official opening will follow in the gallery of the Visitors Centre at 5.30pm for 6.00pm. Sadly the opening is by invitation only, due to the limited space available. All paintings are for sale so Friends will have one of the first opportunities to purchase work at the preview. Friends will have received a bookmark included in the December Fronds edition, which featured drawings by Morgyn Phillips and Pat Morris, two of the artworks for sale in the exhibition.
The exhibition, which comprises work using a variety of mediums, will be open to the general public from Saturday 18 March until noon on Monday 17 April. All artwork exhibited will portray native Australian plants, many of which can be found in the Gardens. As part of the celebrations we will again be featuring a special display of eucalypts for a short time. National Eucalypt Day is 23 March. This section proved very popular last year because it was comprised mainly of matted but unframed paintings.
As previously, a member from one of the three Botanic Art Groups will be available during the exhibition to answer any questions. There will also be a selection of cards and bookmarks for sale and a fund raising raffle. All money from commissions on the sale of paintings and from the raffle will be donated to the Friends. Please encourage your family and friends to visit the exhibition.
