Abstract

Potatoes were part of the trans-Atlantic 'Columbian Exchange' of the 16-17th century, and have become one of humankind's most important food crops.  The details of the origin of the European potato have provided lively debates, however 'molecular palaeontology' is now sorting out possibilities, not only for the potato, but also its pathogens, especially potato virus Y.  Several major reports have been published recently.  Adrian will outline, illustrate and discuss the latest findings.
