The transport of food from paddock to shop is only one source of its impact on the environment. Between the energy embodied in fertiliser to food that is purchased and not eaten, there are many steps that contribute to the environmental footprint of our food. The talk will outline lifecycles of some foods commonly eaten in Canberra, and point to the steps where consumers can exercise a choice to reduce their footprint.

Dr Sarah Ryan is currently a Fellow in CSIRO Land and Water and Deputy Chancellor at the University of Canberra. She has a PhD in agriculture and had a broad-based career, mainly in environmental areas, in CSIRO before retiring. She has had a long involvement in community natural resource management in the ACT, as well as serving on public education advisory committees and councils in the ACT for over 25 years.
