Monday, 3 August 2015 - 10:30am to 11:30am

Date & Time: Monday 3rd August at 10.30 am

Place: Theatrette, ANBG

Topic: The fitness of Kangaroo Grass (Themeda australis) populations under experimentally simulated drought and climate change.

Speaker: Dr Bob Godfree, CSIRO Scientist with the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research (CANBR) in Canberra.

Talk summary: 'Polyploidy', the condition of having more than two sets of chromosomes, is thought to play an important role in the ecology and evolution of plants. It is thought that polyploids may have an inherent advantage in novel or stressful environments, but this has rarely been studied in natural plant populations.

Bob will discuss his experimental investigations into whether polyploidy in Kangaroo Grass confers an advantage during drought, and whether use of polyploids may "future proof" restoration projects under future climate scenarios.
