Sixteen trainee Volunteer Guides recently completed an intensive 5 week training program and are now in the process of practising their new skillls. You may see them studying plants in the Gardens or accompanied on practice walks by mentors from among the Volunteer Guides. On completion of the assessment process they will be ready to share their new skills with visitors, leading walks or driving Flora Explorer, the electric bus provided by the Friends.

Volunteers needed for IT support

The Friends have need of one or two volunteers to help with IT support. This is for technical support and not data entry. This would not be a greatly time-consuming task but there are several computers, and the website, that can need some attention from time to time. This is true for the Friends office computer and also for the new computers being installed in the Botanical Resource Centre to provide access to plant keys etc.

Lesley Jackman, President of the Friends, presented two artworks to Judy West on 21st April at a brief ceremony before the regular Thursday Talk. Both the artworks, by Marjorie Roche and Vivien Pinder, were included in the Botanic Art Exhibition that was held in the Visitor Centre recently. Marjorie’s artwork is a very interesting scratchboard called ‘’Lace Leaf’ Brachychiton acerfolius (Illawarra Flame Tree)’ and Vivien’s is a watercolour entitled ‘Callistemon pinifolius’.  These artworks will probably be displayed in the Dickson room, where artworks donated to the ANBG previously can be viewed.

Seedy Volunteers activities during the 2015-16 summer season

Making new collections from the ACT to the National Seed Bank (NSB) is becoming more difficult as we narrow our target species to complete the collection of the total ACT flora. By 2020 we are aiming to have representative collections of all 1070 vascular plant taxa in the NSB. Click on the heading to read on.
