2013 Volunteer guide intake information session Wednesday, 3 April 2013 - 12:30pm

Applications for the next volunteer guide intake close on 6th May. Application forms and details of the information sessions and the training course are available on the ANBG website. Application forms are also available from the Visitor Centre. The Friends website has more information about what is involved in being a volunteer guide. If you are interested, you can attend one of the three information sessions in the ANBG Theatrette - Wednesday 3rd April at 12:30; Monday 8th April at 5:30; and Friday 19th April at 12:30.

David Taylor and Dan Marges ‘A Walk in the Sydney Basin’ Thursday, 28 March 2013 - 12:30pm

Join the ANBG’s Dan Marges and David Taylor as they take you through the recent reconstruction of this iconic part of the ANBG – a behind-the-scenes look at how the planning, use of specialist materials and plant collecting came together to re-invigorate each end of the Sydney Basin. You may pick up some great and innovative ideas for redeveloping or starting your own garden.

NB: Start at Theatrette and walk to garden (in the event of wet weather we will stay in the Theatrette).

Anne Rawson, ‘Learning to Love Flowers’ Thursday, 21 March 2013 - 12:30pm

The Friends of Australian National Botanic Gardens invite you to enjoy a guided walk, morning tea and botanic art exhibition viewing during Seniors Week.

Take a stroll through the Gardens with an expert guide, then relax with delicious Devonshire Tea at Floresco in the Gardens Café.

Finish your morning with a viewing of the Botanic Art Group’s exhibition Art in the Gardens with Friends, and meet some of the artists.

Barbara Allan ‘COG’s bird blitz: the first eight years’ Thursday, 14 March 2013 - 12:30pm

In 2005 the Canberra Ornithologists’ Group began an ACT-wide bird count over the last weekend in October, involving up to 100 members each year. The talk will look at the overall results of the surveys, the variability between years, the influence of land use types and role the bird blitz plays in our knowledge of the ACT avifauna. Do Rufous Fantails come through your garden before or after the last weekend in October? Are fairy-wrens breeding by then? Are the koels back? These are some of the issues the blitz results can explore.

Viewing of the Ellis Rowan Collection, National Library of Australia Wednesday, 13 March 2013 - 9:15am

Members of the Friends are offered an exclusive opportunity to view the Ellis Rowan Collection of botanical art at the National Library on 13 March. There are still places for the 9:15 am session, but the 10:45 session is now fully booked. We are grateful to Barrie Hadlow, a good friend of the ANBG, for facilitating the visit. Meet in the foyer of the National Library 15 minutes ahead of the session start time. Parking around the NLA is very tight, so allow plenty of time to find parking.

ANPC Workshop Wednesday, 13 March 2013 - 12:00am to Thursday, 14 March 2013 - 11:45pm

The ANPC (Australian Network for Plant Conservation) will be running a two day workshop on plant identification for grassy ecosystems at the ANBG on 13th and !4th March. 2013 Botanic Art Exhibition Friday, 8 March 2013 - 9:30am to Sunday, 7 April 2013 - 4:30pm

The combined Friends' Botanic Art Groups will present a collection of botanic art featuring Australian native plants in the Visitor Centre from Friday 8th March. Many of the plants featured are in the ANBG collection. The majority of paintings will be for sale with a proportion of proceeds going to support Friends activities. Centenary Chat: Hazel Davies ‘Celebration: Say it with Flowers’ Thursday, 7 March 2013 - 12:30pm

The ‘Centenary Chats’ in March 2013 will focus on Celebration.  Hazel Davies will describe how Australian and exotic floras have been intrinsic to our culture when marking significant life and society milestones.

Hazel Davies is a Senior Floristry Teacher at the CIT Floristry Program. As well as teaching floristry over the past 12 years, Hazel has enjoyed an extensive career in floristry since 1978, including being Florist at the Sydney Opera House, and exhibiting at major centres such as the Floriade Exhibitions at the Canberra Centre and for the 2007 APEC Summit.
