Event Description

The ANU Kitchen Garden Program provides opportunities for students to connect with each other and nature while they tend an organic community garden and share the produce they grow.

Abstract

The ANU Kitchen Garden Program creates opportunities for students to connect with each other and with nature through a focus on environmental sustainability and fresh, healthy food. We aim to address isolation and loneliness, provide wholesome and community building activities for students and inspire and educate about sustainability, circular economy principles and environmental stewardship.

The Kitchen Garden Program is based around a beautiful, organic community garden in the centre of campus which thrives due to the living care of a range of students who also live eating the produce they grow and looking after nature.

Biography

Arian McVeigh has been the coordinator of the Kitchen Garden Program at the Australian National University since its foundation in late 2021. She is a passionate sustainability and nature educator and community organiser with more than 20 years’ experience in organic and regenerative gardening, seed saving and permaculture. Arian loves her role engaging students in opportunities to connect with nature and with each other through a focus on sustainably growing and eating fresh food. Arian’s love of growing food and biodiversity and passion for community work led her to found a local seed savers network ten years ago, growing, saving and sharing food seeds with the community and inspiring more seed savers through education and outreach.
