Wattle we see Saturday, 14 September 2019 - 9:30am to 11:30am

Let’s enjoy a ramble among the Wattles on Black Mountain with local plant ecologist, Michael Doherty. Let’s learn more about some of the common Acacias found on Black Mountain, including Acacia dealbata and Acacia buxifolia. We will also learn about how Acacias cope with fire and drought. 

The walk will mostly be flat to undulating, but with a few steeper sections later on in the walk.

Some relevant booklets will be for sale.

Dr Patrick De Decker ‘The Belgica Expedition in Antarctic Waters 1897-1899’ Thursday, 12 September 2019 - 12:30pm

Patrick, an Emeritus Professor, at the ANU, will tell the tale of amazing scientific achievements and human endeavor on The Belgica Expedition.  He will discuss scientific data obtained during the expedition and their subsequent publications over 40 years.

Celebrate Threatened Species Day on 7 September with a stroll through the ANBG with Volunteer Guide Naarilla Hirsch. This walk will take in the diversity of threatened species and communities on show at the ANBG. Discover the range of threats faced by these plants and, on a positive note, explore the critical role the ANBG plays in conserving them. Free, but bookings are essential.

Black Mountain Weeding Working Party Saturday, 7 September 2019 - 9:00am to Sunday, 8 September 2019 - 11:45am

We shall focus on the small remaining area of woodland in the south-west corner of the Black Mountain Nature Reserve.

Meet: At the Caswell Drive entry on the mountain side. Drive from Belconnen Way southwards along Caswell Drive towards Glenloch Interchange, Woden, or Tuggeranong. Note the yellow diamond shape advisory sign showing access road on left, and the blue and white “P” sign for parking. Pull into the carpark carefully. Look for banners.

Dr Phillip Kodela ‘Wattle we do with Acacia’ Thursday, 5 September 2019 - 12:30pm

Philip, from the Department of Environment and Energy, will discuss interesting facts and figures about this genus and related taxa, including recent taxonomic debates and developments in the Flora of Australia and the plant identification tool WATTLE.

Acacia (wattle) walk in the gardens

Our next meeting will be a guided walk in the gardens - there will be no formal talk in the Theatrette this month.

Two volunteer guides are giving up their valuable time to take us on an informative Acacia (wattle) walk. With the Acacias in bloom, this should be a very special morning.

The walk will be followed by lunch at the Pollen Café at 12 midday.

Glenn Cocking ‘Moths and Bushblitzes’ Thursday, 29 August 2019 - 12:30pm

Glenn, a volunteer curator at the Australian National Insect Collection, will discuss the moth fauna of Black Mountain in the context of some general observations about moths, and how to understand the families present in the ACT, and tell some stories about an eclectic selection of particular species from wider afield. Dr Laura Rayner ‘Parrot Central for a Bird on the Edge’ Thursday, 22 August 2019 - 12:30pm

Laura, a conservation ecologist, will bring us up-to-date on her research on Superb Parrots – a superb bird pushed to the very edge of its natural range by climate change and land clearing.  It is now a race against time to determine what pressures the parrot is facing and what needs to be done to secure its future.
