Photographic Group: Irene Lorbergs, 'Events Photography - Flash' Friday, 29 April 2016 - 10:30am

Irene will present a short talk on ‘Events Photography’ with a strong focus on using flash. After the talk, Irene will provide us with more information on a guided walk in the Gardens.

Irene is a professional photographer and runs the Canberra School of Photography; she also lectures at universities and TAFE. Irene is a member of the Friends Photographic Group.

Venue: ANBG Theatrette.

Michael Reeves ‘Capital Metro Light Rail: Landscape planning and sustainability’ Thursday, 28 April 2016 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Capital Metro is Canberra's light rail project and an important part of the ACT Government’s vision to deliver a truly sustainable and creative city. This talk will discuss the plans for biodiversity improvement, through ecologically sensitive planting and protection of vegetation during and after construction. Michael Reevess is Canberra Metro Landscape Architect.

Matthew Higgins ‘Ainslie to Kossie: Window on a wonder wander.’ Thursday, 21 April 2016 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Matthew, a professional historian, will give an illustrated presentation on the natural values found between Canberra and Mt Kosciuszko. He will focus mainly on the natural values, looking at animals, birds, plants, geology, water, snow, fire, climate and some underlying human stories of our high country.  Cultural aspects of some species' stories will be discussed, and a little bushcraft thrown in.  As well as celebrating biodiversity along the route, the talk will look at several key issues including feral species, local extinctions and climate change threats.

Dr John de Majnik ‘Latest Research and Development for the wildflower industry of Australia’ Thursday, 14 April 2016 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

John Majnikis the Senior Program Manager for the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation.  He is responsible for the Plant Industry programs which include the Pasture Seeds, Rice, Ginger and the New and Emerging Industries R&D programs. John will give a broad-ranging talk on the latest research and development for Australian wildflowers.

Plant Science Group Technical Talk: Dr Christine Cargill, 'The Hornworts'. Monday, 4 April 2016 - 10:30am

Although small in stature and small in the number of species worldwide, the hornworts are a pivotal bryophyte group for understanding the evolution of plant life on earth. Find out what hornworts are, what they look like, what unique and interesting characters they possess and their place in the great plant tree of life.

Black Mountain - weeding working party Saturday, 2 April 2016 - 8:30am to 11:30am

The Friends of Black Mountain arrange monthly working parties to care for the Black Mountain Reserve. Their next working party will focus on removing weeds from the burnt area behind the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

Photographic Group: Early morning walk in the ANBG Friday, 1 April 2016 - 7:00am to Saturday, 2 April 2016 - 6:45am

This is an opportunity for the ‘Friends Photographic Group’ to take photos in the ANBG Gardens, taking advantage of the early morning light and abundance of birds at that time of day. It is also a chance to the practice the bird photography techniques presented at Dave Bassett’s talk on ‘Bird Photography’ in March.
