Plant Science Group Technical Talk: Nunzio Knerr 'Biodiversity Metrics and their Visualisation - Exploring our Collections'. Monday, 7 December 2015 - 10:30am

Biodiversity can be measured by more than just a count of the number of species in a given area. Genetic information along with community data allows for interesting ways to explore biodiversity at many scales.  Our national collections contain a mass of historical information that may inform us about biodiversity hotspots, past and present.

This talk will cover different ways of looking at biodiversity data using current visualisation technologies, taking some iconic Australian plant families as examples.

Dr Pep Canadell ‘Human Carbon Emissions and how to Stabilize the Climate’ Thursday, 26 November 2015 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Global carbon emissions from human activities have been growing relentless since the beginning of the Industrial Era, and the effects of climate change are already noticeable around the world. For the first time in international negotiations, over 160 countries will meet in Paris this December, under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to establish an agreement to prevent climate change from reaching dangerous levels thought to be at 2 degrees C above preindustrial global temperature. What are the latest trajectories on greenhouse gases and what will happen in Paris?

Atticus Fleming ‘AWC: a new model for conservation’ Thursday, 19 November 2015 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Atticus, inaugural chief executive of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, will describe how AWC is integrating science, philanthropy, sound business principles and a strong commitment to practical land management on order to reverse the decline in Australia’s wildlife.

Applying this innovative business model, AWC owns and manages 23 properties around Australia, protecting endangered wildlife across more than 3 million hectares in iconic locations such as the Kimberley, Cape York, Arnhem Land and the central deserts.

Special Talk: Julie Quinn 'Abating the threat from feral animals: policy to practical action' Sunday, 15 November 2015 - 1:00pm to Monday, 16 November 2015 - 12:45pm

In Australia, feral animals have a huge impact on native species, and are a major cause of decline in many of our threatened species. For example, feral cats alone impact over 142 threatened species of mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs. Control of feral animals can be complex and challenging.

Dr Brett Summerell ‘Root rots, rusts and water moulds: Invasive diseases in botanic gardens’ Thursday, 5 November 2015 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Plant diseases are the bane of many botanic gardens causing death, destruction and difficulty in maintaining their collections. Conversely these same diseases may also provide an opportunity for botanic gardens to provide a major contribution in plant conservation as a sentinel for understanding the impact of these diseases on specific species. This talk will focus on some of the key plant diseases affecting Australian plants in botanic gardens (and home gardens) and the role botanic gardens play in combating them.
