Growing Friends Autumn Plant Sale Saturday, 4 March 2023 - 8:30am to 11:00am

The Growing Friends' boutique Autumn Plant Sale will be held in the car park between the Crosbie Morrison Building and the Banksia Centre from 8.30am to 11am, unless sold out earlier. The plant list for the sale (PDF, 517 KB) has detailed information about each plant. The event will follow any ACT Government COVID-Safe guidelines which may operate at the time.

Dr James Clugston ‘Towards a better understanding into the Bush Peas Mirbelieae (Fabaceae) in Australia’ Thursday, 2 March 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Recent evidence shows that the tribe Mirbelieae is greatly underdescribed and James, from the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, will talk about recent advances in DNA sequencing of Mirbelieae that has helped a consensus on the taxonomic relationship of species and genera within the tribe. Bookings can be made from the Friday before the talk until Wednesday night or until seating limits are reached. Emeritus Professor Patrick De Deckker ‘The extraordinary scientific achievements of the French Baudin expedition (1800-1804) in Australian waters’ Thursday, 23 February 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

In this talk, Patrick will outline the numerous discoveries and achievements made by the French expedition. He will discuss some of its cartographic accomplishments and compare some with those made by Matthew Flinders at about the same time. Professor Justin Borevitz ‘Precision Landscape Regeneration’ Thursday, 16 February 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Justin, from Research School of Biology, ANU, will introduce precision landscape regeneration, including methods in Eucalyptus foundation species to re-build agro-ecosystems, methods for boosting soil carbon with microbes and management, and the outsized role Australia can have for world’s planetary health and resilience. Honorary Professor Penny Olsen ‘Feather and Brush’ Thursday, 9 February 2023 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Penny, from the ANU, will briefly trace the 300-year history of Australian bird art — from the crude engravings illustrating accounts of the earliest European voyages of discovery to the diversity of artwork available today.  Penny is happy to sign copies of the book after the talk. Weeding Work Party Saturday, 4 February 2023 - 8:30am to 11:30am

Our next weeding work party is planning to remove more weed creepers including Billardiera heterophylla and B. fusiformis (WA Bluebell, Sollya) and Passiflora cinnabarina (Red Passionflower).  Meet: at the top of the ANBG’s Southern Car-park. To reach this place, come through the main entry gates, turn left immediately, follow the road around the perimeter of the car park to the top row, and find a car park space near the parking pay machine. Summer Butterfly Walks - now sold out Sunday, 22 January 2023 - 10:30am to 12:00pm, Sunday, 22 January 2023 - 1:30pm to 3:00pm

Our local expert, Dr Suzi Bond, will show us and tell us about butterflies and the plants they like in the ANBG.  Meet: Visitor Centre, ANBG  Bring: Binoculars to see the butterflies more clearly if you wish. Water. Snacks if you wish.  Wear: Sturdy walking gear, including hat and stout shoes.  Bookings only - unfortunately, all places have now been taken. This event is for Friends Members only.
