Discover the amazing secrets of the plants that live in the Australian bush on this family-friendly tour at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. We will travel on our magical Flora bus, walk through the Rainforest Gully, visit the Red Centre Garden and finish at the Paperbark Treehouse. Join Canberra Flower Club members Ruth Bourke and Lorraine Kwong for a flower arranging demonstration that showcases Australian native flora. The demonstration will use vases made by members of Claybodies. The aim of the arrangements is to create harmony between the vase and the flowers to create an aesthetically pleasing result. Ian Fraser, a local conservationist, says the stories of these name creations can be intriguing, funny, erroneous and sometimes downright ridiculous, telling us more about us than the birds. Join ceramic artist and Claybodies member, Ingrid Adler, with a demonstration of the techniques used in her woven Eucalyptus leaf plates. Ingrid will reveal the processes she uses – from cutting the leaves to weaving them into beautiful plates – and will explain the entire process from selection of clay to firing. The demonstration will be held in the Banksia Centre and is free to attend. Chris Cargill is the curator of the cryptogam collections of the Australian National Herbarium which are located at the ANBG, and is also a researcher, bryologist and taxonomist. Chris will be showing people the bryophytes that occur naturally in the Gardens rather than specially planted, such as many of the flowering plants in the ANBG. She will talk about their diversity, how to distinguish them from other organisms growing in similar habitats such as lichens and she will talk about their function in the environment. Let’s celebrate green and gold by enjoying a ramble and learning more about the different Acacia (Wattles) on Black Mountain after wetter years with local plant ecologist, Dr Michael Doherty.. Michael has done research about Acacia and other native plants and how they cope with fire and drought. Maybe the weather we have had in recent years is part of that? (The ramble will be on rough uneven ground with some steep sections.) Bookings are essential. |
