Roger will trace the origins of insect pollinators among the gymnosperms and through the rise of the flowering plants to their diversity at the present day, and how the pollinators have affected the diversity of flower structure and function among modern plant families. Lyndall, palaeontologist and author, will talk about ecological advantages that very large marsupial species may have had during the Pleistocene, and unravel the disadvantages that such a large size may have been when humans came to share their land. There will be a Plant Science Group talk on Monday 11th July in the Theatrette at the ANBG. The Speaker is Joe McAuliffe (ANBG Nursery Manager), Topic Ex situ conservation of a critically endangered fern, Outline This presentation will discuss the ex situ conservation of the critically endangered Dales Waterfall Fern, Pneumatopteris truncata, through a partnership between the ANBG, including the National Seed Bank and Nursery, and Christmas Island National Park. In Australia, this species is restricted to Christmas Island, where fewer than 50 plants are known to occur. This collaborative project has successfully established an ex situ ‘insurance’ collection of the Dales Waterfall Fern through targeted germplasm collecting, banking and propagation. |

Con, formerly of the environment department and now a citizen scientist since retirement, studied the patterns of occurrence of six woodland species in 16 inner north natural and semi-natural fragments. He will present the study findings and discuss some implications for the urbanization of the Lower Molonglo.
