Black Mountain Weeding Work Party Saturday, 2 July 2022 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

Our next weeding work party is planning to remove more creepers from the areas close to the Frith Road entrance to the reserve. 
Meet:  Frith Road, Acton. Park along the CSIRO side of the road, please. Look for banner(s)Bring:   Other friends if you wish, as everyone is welcome.  Wear:  hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.  We shall break for delicious morning tea at about 10:30am.

Special talk - Dr Judith Field ‘Last of Megafauna? Unravelling the debates around the Late Pleistocene Faunal Extinctions' Friday, 1 July 2022 - 12:30pm

Associate Professor Judith Field, from University of NSW, will look at some of these animals individually to better understand their behaviour, diets and their place in the Australian environment and discuss why they may have been susceptible to a changing landscape climate - and possibly a new predator.

Dr Liz Truswell ‘Banksia: the fossil history of an iconic genus’ Thursday, 30 June 2022 - 12:30pm

Liz, formerly a Chief Research Scientist with Geoscience Australia, will reflect on the long fossil history of Banksia, showing they are of greater antiquity than formerly imagined, and their suite of features in increasingly challenging climatic environments.

Photographic Group June meeting Friday, 24 June 2022 - 10:00am

The Photographic Group will meet on Friday 24 June at 10.00 in the Theatrette. The meeting will feature a presentation on bird photography by Graham Gall. All Friends are welcome, so if you wish to attend just turn up or contact a committee member at photo@friendsanbg.org.au.

Michael Mulvaney and Chris Davey ‘Gang-gang nesting ecology’ Thursday, 23 June 2022 - 12:30pm

Chris and Michael will reveal how citizen science research by hundreds of Canberrans has contributed to the scientific and wider understanding of Gang-gangs and how this research is to be continued with a focus on trying to answer why the Gang-gang numbers have been stable here, but declined in other places.

People and Place: The Black Mountain Oral History Project Wednesday, 22 June 2022 - 11:30am to 12:30pm

Our June talk this year will be presented by Dr Mary Hutchison, an oral historian who is preparing an oral history of Back Mountain.  Mary will introduce the aims and methods of oral history practice and present initial insights drawn from the progress of her interviews to date.

Fire and Water Walk Sunday, 19 June 2022 - 11:00am to 12:00pm

Fires of varying intensities have a significant impact on Australia’s landscapes; some plants rely on or respond well to fire, while others are killed by fire. Some plants need continuous water, in wetlands, while others prefer dry conditions. A volunteer guide will show you examples of all of these in a free tour. Daily from Monday June 13th to Sunday June 19th 11am-12 noon. Meet at the clock near the bridge. No booking required for individuals, but groups of seven or more people should contact walks@friendsanbg.org.au a week before the planned walk.
