Weeding Work Party Saturday, 5 January 2019 - 8:30am to Sunday, 6 January 2019 - 10:45am

We shall focus on removing non-local Sweet Pittosporum (Pittosporum undulatum) (perhaps not really so sweet as a weed!) and Yellow Pittosporum (P. revolutum) and other naturalised woody species in the peripheral areas of the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG). 

Meet: the ANBG Southern car park. After going in the main gate, turn sharp left, follow road around the perimeter up to the top level of that carpark. Look for banner or balloons near the pay-parking machine. 

Bring:  Enthusiasm, your family and friends, water (and a small digger, if you wish). Everyone is welcome.

Wear:  hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.

ANBG Friends Photographic Group - November meeting Friday, 30 November 2018 - 10:30am to Saturday, 1 December 2018 - 11:45am

Our guest speaker will be Con Boekel – bird photography.

Con's lifelong interest in birds has progressed through egg collecting on his parents' farm, bird watching, writing articles, contributing to collective databases and surveys, and culminated with bird photography. He has contributed images to BirdLife Australia, the Internet Bird Collection, and the Oriental Bird Club photographic database.

The speaker will be followed by a ‘Show and Tell’ by members.

The Photographic Group meet on the last Friday of the month at 10.30am in the Gardens Theatrette.

Dr Pep Canadell ‘Climate change: tales of the future today' Thursday, 29 November 2018 - 12:30pm

Australia has seen unprecedented impacts of climate change over recent years associated with climate extreme events superimposed on an always increasing warming trend.  Pep, from CSIRO, will discuss some of the impacts, what makes them unprecedented, their future evolution and current and emerging opportunities for mitigating climate change.

 

 

Dr Francisco Encinas-Viso ‘Plant-pollinator networks in Kosciuszko National Park’ Thursday, 22 November 2018 - 12:30pm

Following his first Thursday Talk on the extraordinary natural history of his homeland, Venezuela, Francisco returns to the ANBG to speak on his current research which is using historic natural history specimens and field data to unravel the past structure of pollen transport networks in Kosciuszko National Park.  After matching the historic field data and plant specimens in the Australian National Herbarium, Francisco visits the areas where these specimens originated to find out how plant-pollinator communities have changed in the last decades.

Friends Photographic Group exhibition - 'perspectives' Thursday, 22 November 2018 - 12:00am to Sunday, 9 December 2018 - 11:45pm

The Photographic Group's annual exhibition will be on show in the Visitors Information Centre exhibition space from Thursday 22 November. The Centre is open between 9.30 am to 4.30 pm every day.

The exhibition displays over 50 framed works plus unframed prints and many beautiful cards, all produced from photographs taken of the flora and fauna of the Gardens and the wider surrounds. Most items are for sale and make great Christmas presents for that someone special.

Pollinators At Work In the Gardens - members walks Tuesday, 30 October 2018 - 10:00am to Wednesday, 31 October 2018 - 11:45am, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 - 10:00am to Wednesday, 21 November 2018 - 11:45am

Join local expert, Dr Roger Farrow, a retired entomologist from CSIRO, on a free walk through the Gardens observing a variety of pollinators at work.  Discover the myriad of ways flowers attract pollinators and guide them to their pollen. Visual aids will be used to help identify pollinators. NOTE: This walk is only for Friends of the ANBG. See booking details.

Emeritus Professor Jim Hone ‘In the footsteps of Alfred Russel Wallace’ Thursday, 15 November 2018 - 12:30pm

Jim will review aspects of the British naturalist’s life and work in Indonesia, based on his travels from Sumatra in the west to New Guinea in the east.  He wrote a joint paper with Charles Darwin on what is now called the theory of evolution.
