Plant Science Group Technical Talk: Anthony Whalen, 'The Australasian e-Flora – a new direction for the Flora of Australia' Monday, 5 December 2016 - 10:30am

This presentation will outline current Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) priorities, particularly how the well known Flora of Australia series is moving from hard copy books to an interactive “e-Flora” website. Discussion will include how botanical authors will be able to actively contribute to the e-Flora in the very future. A live demonstration of the e-Flora will be provided.

Wear:  hat, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves, stout shoes.

A delicious morning tea will be provided about 10.00am, with some Christmas cake.

Photographic Group: 'Extended Show and Tell' Friday, 25 November 2016 - 10:30am

This meeting of the Photographic Group will be devoted to ‘Show and Tell’. Share your latest photos of flora and fauna taken in the Gardens. Photographs of Australian native flora and fauna from outside the Gardens may also be included. Maximum of ten photos per person.

Members of the Photographic Group are invited to stay on after the meeting for a Christmas lunch at the Floresco Cafe. RSVP by 23 November for lunch, by email to: photo@friendsanbg.org.au

Sebastian Lang ‘Strategies for Australia to protect threatened species.’ Thursday, 24 November 2016 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Australia is a country rich in unique plants and animals. They are core to our identity, culturally significant to Indigenous peoples, important to the health of our environment and a strong contributor to our economy. Our distinctive plants and animals are a gift and ours to protect.

The Australian Government has established a new national approach to threatened species. The Threatened Species Strategy is a plan for how we will prioritise effort and work in partnership with the community and state and territory governments over the next five years.

Photographic Group: 'Refocus - Exhibition' Wednesday, 23 November 2016 - 9:30am to Monday, 12 December 2016 - 4:45pm

Refocus is an exhibition of photographs by the Friends’ Photographic Group which will be shown in the Visitor Information Centre ANBG.  The exhibition opens to the public on 23 November and runs until 11 December 2016.  The majority of works have been taken in the ANBG but will also include some photographs of Australian Flora and Fauna taken elsewhere in Australia. All works will be for sale.

Dr Helen Cleugh ‘ Earth System and Climate Change Science for a Productive and Resilient Australia' Thursday, 17 November 2016 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Helen, Leader of CSIRO’s Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub, will outline Australia’s national capability in weather and climate prediction, observation and research.

Growing Friends Spring Plant Sale Saturday, 12 November 2016 - 8:30am to Sunday, 13 November 2016 - 10:45am

The Growing Friends Spring Sale will be held on Saturday, 12 November 2016.

Plants are propagated and tended by the Growing Friends from material sourced from the Gardens. All proceeds go to support the Gardens. Be early for the best selection.  Information about some of the plants that will be on sale is available here. A Plant List is  available here.

When: Saturday 12th November 2016
Time: 8.30 am – 11.00 am or earlier if sold out
Where: Small car park behind the Crosbie Morrison Centre, Australian National Botanic Gardens

Most plants cost $5. There are a few advanced plants for $10.

Book Sale Saturday, 12 November 2016 - 8:30am to Sunday, 13 November 2016 - 10:45am

There will be a book sale in conjunction with the Growing Friends Sale. It will be situated in the Banks Building, adjacent to the plant sale. All proceeds will go to the Friends.

Roger Farrow ‘Insects: there is more to them than meets the eye.’ Thursday, 10 November 2016 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Roger, formerly of CSIRO Entomology, will feature the remarkable adaptations that are found in local insect fauna.

Insects have filled almost every terrestrial niche and have seen plants and animals come and go since the Ordovician era 400 million years ago. They have evolved a huge range of behavioural traits and survival strategies over this enormous time scale. This talk will feature some of the remarkable adaptations that can be found in our local insect fauna.
