Become a Volunteer Guide - recruiting now for 2019

Do you have a passion for Australian plants? Do you enjoy the outdoors and spending time with like-minded people? Do you embrace the challenge of expanding your knowledge and skills? Does meeting people from around Australia and from overseas sound like fun? Then the Volunteer Guides Program at the Gardens is for you.

Applications are now open; for details see the Gardens website. Information sessions in the ANBG Theatrette will be held on Wednesday 19th September at 12.30pm and Tuesday 25th September at 5.30pm.

The September 2018 edition of Library Connect (PDF, 844KB) provides information on the Australian Reading Hour to be held on the 20th September 2018, features new books on native bees, agriculture and WA wildflowers, and recommends books on Banksias, Wattles and Daniel Solander, as well as spotlighting an e-journal on Biodiversity and Conservation and a golden memory from the Archives.

Wake Up With the Birds, 2018 season

The Australian National Botanic Gardens provide a fantastic habitat for many of Canberra’s birds, with water and nectar in abundance.

During Floriade we offer an early morning walk at weekends. Join us for a 1½ hour guided walk to see many of the Gardens' amazing birds. This year we are not including breakfast, but you are welcome to purchase a coffee or breakfast following the bird walk in Pollen – the Gardens Café.

Library Connect July 2018

The July 2018 edition of Library Connect (PDF, 1108KB) features a new Wildflower app and journal articles about the ANBG, as well as new books and other topics. One new book, Flora of Australia: A Botanical Art Worldwide Exhibition from the Botanical Art Society of Australia, features local botanical artists Nilavan Adams, Cheryl Hodges, Wendy Antoniak and Morgyn Phillips among others.

'Eucalypt' issue 50 published

The latest edition of Eucalypt, the bi-annual newsletter of the Australian Association of Friends of Botanic Gardens (AAFBG), is now available.

In this edition, read all about the AAFBG biennial conference, held at Benalla back in April, plus an article about Camperdown’s use of Instagram, the ‘Care for the Rare’ project being introduced in Victorian Gardens, the Pangarinda BG where the Murray joins Lake Alexandrina, and details of the 2020 conference in Brisbane.

Spring walks

Friends of the ANBG are delighted to present a number of walks this spring.

Last year the Volunteer Guides prepared specialised walks for the Australasian Botanic Gardens Volunteer Guides Conference held at the ANBG. You are invited to join a Guide on one of these walks.

Please note there are a limited number of places available for each walks, so bookings are essential.

Library Connect June 2018

The June Library Connect includes a report on the very successful Library and Information Week last month. It also has reviews of some of the new books in the library, including 'Botanical Illustration : the essential reference' which members of the Botanical Art Groups will find particularly interesting. Sarah Martin's 'Bush Heritage Australia' will appeal to those of us who are interested in the preservation of Australia's wild places.

Black Mountain Symposium 2018

Black Mountain was declared a nature reserve on 23 July 1970. In the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of this declaration, the Friends of Black Mountain in association with the Molonglo Catchment Group is holding a Symposium at which invited speakers will give presentations summarising what we know about the area.

The Symposium is now fully booked. All 150 seats at the CSIRO Discovery Centre Theatre will be occupied.

Themed talks will be on Friday 24 August, followed by drinks and nibbles. Themed walks will be held on Black Mountain on the morning of Saturday 25 August 2018.

12th Australasian Plant Conservation Conference (APCC12)

“Moving house – a new age for plant translocation and restoration”

12 to 16 November 2018, Canberra

The Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research (CANBR) at CSIRO, and the Australian Network for Plant Conservation (ANPC) will host a week of exciting presentations, local field trips and a 1-day threatened plant translocation workshop. The biennial Australasian Plant Conservation Conference has become the premier event in Australia to discuss plant conservation issues with a variety of groups, from practitioners to researchers.

Call for Abstracts opens 2 May 2018, and Early Bird registrations open 21 May 2018.
